The Supremes, Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, Destiny’s Child. Girl groups have a long and storied history in music. PsiRyn, a new group backed by entertainment mogul Kandi Burruss, is hoping to make their mark on the music industry. The three-member group comprised of Jada Denise, Anaya Cheyenne and Victoria McQueen sat down with Just N Life to discuss forming PsiRyn, getting Kandi’s attention and performing with legends SWV.

Just N Life: You guys were all solo artists at one time, but Anaya, can you tell us how you guys all got together to become a group?
Anaya Cheyenne: We all met at a performing arts school called AGI Entertainment. We were all on a song called “Walk Away.” And we wanted to promote the song. We weren’t a group at the time, still solo artists. We just happened to do a trio situation. We promoted the song by doing a cover of harmonies on Instagram. And that video got us a lot of attention. At the time, Kandi Burruss was in cahoots with Nick Cannon, who wanted to build a supergroup. Kandi saw us and was like, “These girls got it.” She reached out to a producer we were working with and we all thought we should give it a shot.
JNL: How did it feel to be co-signed by the biggest boss, Kandi Burruss?
Victoria McQueen: It felt really amazing. It felt surreal. It’s like okay, are we really getting this call right now?
JNL: PsiRyn has toured with Xscape, SWV and you are currently on the Wild’ N Out Tour with Nick Cannon. You guys have not been playing corner clubs, you have been performing in huge arenas. How has that experience been?
Jada Denise: It feels great to be outside and to be performing. We definitely learned a lot during the Queens of R&B Tour. One night we actually got pulled on stage to sing “Rain” with SWV. My mind was blown. But, we’re also just very grateful to be in this position. Because this is what we’ve been wanting to do our whole lives — perform and sing and dance. And to be mentored by the person you’re being mentored by is just incredible.

JNL: Your song “Sober” is up for Grammy consideration and is currently at 15 on the Billboard charts. What’s the inspiration behind the song?
Anaya Cheyenne: It’s really just about how we go through a lot on a daily basis and so sometimes we just have to find time for ourselves to be able to like chill and relax or maybe just have fun with friends and family — whatever that looks like to everybody whether it’s having a drink, whether it’s going to a party just chilling at home. We just wanted to put out something that everybody could be like, “Yeah, I can relate.”
PsiRyn is currently on the “Nick Cannon Presents: The Wild N Out Tour.” Their debut single “Sober” is #15 on Billboard Adult R&B Airplay and is available now on all streaming platforms.
