Netflix is rebooting Scooby-Doo, and it’s found the perfect young actors to headline the show. Structured as an eight-episode series, the show will follow the original Scooby-Doo cartoon characters and will be released in 2027. Though details of the plot have yet to be released, the show will be the second live-action adaptation of the beloved cartoon.

Netflix announced last week that it found its perfect cast: McKenna Grace as Daphne, Abby Ruder Fortson as Velma, Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, and Tanner Hagen as Shaggy. Frank Welker, the original voice of Scooby-Doo, is rumored to be joining the cast once again as Scooby, but this remains unconfirmed.

A New Era for the Mystery Gang?

The new group of actors is significantly younger than their counterparts in the original live-action Scooby-Doo movies of the early 2000s. The age difference suggests the show’s plot and content might focus on a more adolescent version of the iconic characters. Thanks to the ambiguous ages of the characters in the original 1969 TV series, Scooby Doo adaptations over the last five decades have had the liberty to adjust the characters’ ages to fit the stories they wanted to tell.

Despite being young actors, the new cast boasts significant acting experience. Grace, the 19-year-old actress set to play Daphne, has an impressive, extensive career. As a child actor, Grace starred in major projects like Gifted and I, Tonya, and even earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Esther Keyes in The Handmaid’s Tale. In 2025, she starred as Clara Grant in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You. Perhaps her most anticipated project of the year is her role as Maysilee Donner in the movie adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping, the most recent book in the Hunger Games series. The official teaser trailer has over six million views on YouTube.

Fortson, who will play Velma in the upcoming series, also grew up acting. Most notably, she starred as Margaret Simon in the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s book Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Other notable roles include starring alongside Paul Rudd as Ant-Man’s daughter in the Ant-Man films and her role as Billy in Forever My Girl.

Maxwell Jenkins

Jenkins, cast as Fred, is known for his role as Will Robinson in all three seasons of the Netflix series Lost in Space. He also played a young Jack Reacher in the Amazon series Reacher, based on Lee Child’s book series.

Hagen will round out the cast as Shaggy. Though his list of previous work is shorter than his co-stars’, he recently appeared as a patient in Season 1 of The Pitt. He’s also set to appear in the upcoming film The Man Who Changed the World alongside Christopher Lowell, Jeanine Mason, and Wallace Shawn.

Fans are excited to learn more details about the show’s plot and setting in the coming months. With such a talented, young cast, the show promises to be a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
