Saying Goodbye to Grey Interiors and Hello To Colorful Designs

Colorful living room

Every since the early 2010s, “millennial grey” became a popular color for homes. Now, 15 years later, colors are finally making their way back into home designs.

As the name itself says, this grey-theme uses different shades of grey for walls and decoration. The “millennial” term attached itself to the grey because a lot people in their 30s, popularly recognized as millennials, have become obsessed with using a grey palette to decorate their spaces.

While it does give off a “clean” aesthetic, color makes rooms pop and adds a touch of personality. Don’t be afraid to incorporate some color in your home—I promise it won’t take away from the “clean” aesthetic if that’s what you’re afraid of losing. Looking to redo your space? These home-style trends add personality while still keeping it looking clean.

Classic/Traditional-Style Homes

Tuscan

From the early 2000s, the Tuscan-style interior is making its comeback! This design looks and feels both warm and welcoming. Tuscan-style follows a brown palette with earthy tones. This design is initially inspired by Tuscany, Italian designs, following a rustic, old-world charm. One of the most popular rooms with this design is for the kitchen, using marbled islands and brown cabinets.

Spanish

Spanish-styled homes can be found all across the United States, but are more commonly found in states that were once under Spanish rule. This includes states such as Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. This style blends traditional and modern design elements by using decorative tiles, stucco walls, and terracotta roofs. Though there isn’t just one color to follow, these homes typically have a white interior and exterior, with the inside having hints of all colors.

If you’re looking to keep your white walls, a Spanish-style home could be the perfect option for you! The decorative tiles help to add a pop of color and personality without having to take away from the wall color itself.

Farmhouse

Farmhouse homes have stayed a popular, classic style over the years, especially across the U.S., because of their cozy and welcoming feel. This style combines rustic and modern elements, creating a space that feels homey and put together. Farmhouse-style homes typically follow a neutral color palette, including whites, creams, and soft greys with hints of wooden accents. Some features include exposed wooden beams and barn-style doors.

Farmhouse-style balances and blends the modern and rustic feel. This style can also incorporate hints of light, pastel colors, such as pink or green.

Shabby Chic

The shabby chic style is known for its soft, feminine, vintage-inspired look that feels cozy yet elegant. This design focuses on light, airy colors such as whites, creams, and pastel pinks. Shabby chic is decorated with antique furniture and decor pieces, accompanied by floral patterns and lace or ruffled fabrics. This style looks and feels very “chic” and charming, and gives a “grandma” vibe but in the best way possible!

Bold-Style Homes

Maximalism

A maximalist-style home is the very opposite of “millennial grey.” Instead of sticking to a neutral palette, this style embraces bold, bright colors, patterns, and even layered decor. Maximalist spaces are filled with personality by mixing all kinds of different textures, prints, and statement pieces in every room.

Maximalist-style can become very personal, as the decor is usually personal favorite pictures, colorful furniture, patterned rugs, and other unique decorations. Although some may think it’s too much happening at once, this style is all about intentional design and making a space feel expressive, not cluttered.

Bohemian (Boho)

Bohemian or boho style is known for its relaxed and free-spirited design. Boho homes mix earthy tones with natural textures, including elements and decor such as plants, layered rugs, wooden furniture, and woven decor pieces. Like the maximalist-style, bohemian doesn’t have a strict color palette as well, but will typically follow a palette of neutral colors with hints of warm colors, such as deep greens.

Glam

Glam-style has a bold, luxurious look that makes a home feel elegant and timeless. Hints of gold and/or silver are typically used, along with velvet and marble materials. Although this style follows a neutral color palette, its accents of metallic and dramatic colors are what make this design stand out from others. Glam-style uses sleek and decorative furniture and decorations, such as statement mirrors and lighting, along with bold, attention-grabbing accents.

It’s okay to step away from the grey! Don’t be afraid to bring color and character back into your space. Your home should feel personal, like a reflection of you, not something that follows a passing trend.
