I didn’t start learning how to do my own hair until I was a freshman in college. Learning how to do your own hair is a major win for the curly hair community. With school coming back in session, now is the time to stock up on hair products. August is National Black Owned Business Month, so let’s use this as an chance to highlight brands that understand the assignment.
The Doux

Inspired by 90s culture, Maya and Brian Smith created The Doux. Talk about an ultimate power couple! The brand focuses on combos that work together. Their Mousse Def Texture Foam and Big Poppa Defining Gel are extremely popular with wash and go’s. Fans also love how active Smith is on The Doux Hair Care TikTok page. Seeing someone just as passionate and involved in their product years later deserves praise!
Camille Rose

Janell Stephens’s main goal had nothing to do with hair. Originally, she wanted something to help with her kids dry skin due to their eczema. Then, as per the official Camille Rose site, she expanded into hair with the idea that “whatever goes on your body should be good enough to go in it.” That’s how we got Camille Rose. Then, in 2019, she launched the Janell Ennis Stephens Foundation which has changed the lives of women starting their own businesses. Stephens’s is an example of how ideas and solutions are much closer than we think.
Grow-Good Beauty

The origin of Grow Good Beauty is similar to Camille Rose: it started with ingredients at home. Cardi B knew what it was like to not have the money to buy a 10 step hair care routine. When building her brand, she kept that in mind. The interesting thing about Grow Good Beauty is that the brand focuses on four main things: shampoo, conditioner, a hair mask, and a serum. Once again, Cardi B is showing the world that going back to the basics is all you need.
Cecred

Another singer that has dipped into the hair game is Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Her hair brand, Cécred, prides itself for providing hair care for all hair types. The brand has it all: shampoo, conditioner, stylers, bundles, travel kits, and more. Their Restoring Hair & Edge Drops won the award for “Best Scalp Serum” by Allure. Fans on the internet have agreed that the results are worth the price.
Taliah

Taliah is an affordable and underrated brand! The founder, Taliah Waajid, knew the struggle of being a kid and learning how to do hair all on your own. In addition to that, she wanted her clients to still have a nice look when they couldn’t make it to the salon. If that wasn’t enough, she started her business at the young age of 14. With a range of products and prices, Taliah Waajid created a brand to serve her community. The Great Detangler is my personal favorite!
As a black woman, I try to take acknowledge black owned businesses when I can. Working with products with coily hair texture in mind is such a gift. These brands do such a great job creating products that fit their consumers. So let’s give these brands a round of applause for understanding the problems and giving solutions.
