There are many engaging, full-body workouts you can do right from your living room to get your blood flowing or to lift and tone. When it’s this cold, getting out of bed for work can be hard enough, let alone for a workout. With your New Year resolutions and health goals in mind, having a backup plan for when the world slows down due to snow and ice can be a great idea to ensure that you keep moving.
Whether you are just looking to be more active or to see eventual improvements, it is crucial to achieve some type of movement each day if you want to circulate your blood and boost your metabolism. Committing to a home workout plan can help you save money, especially if you trade out those expensive Pilates classes for the occasional free online video. Trying new home workouts can also save you time so you don’t have to scrape ice off your windshield or cautiously inch down the icy street.

With an influx of online workouts to choose from, many require little equipment to start. It may even involve supplies you can find lying around the house; and can keep you from lying around the house. Below are 5 examples of how to get moving from home that may help you through your winter rut.
- Yoga with Adriene – There’s no better free way to get into a calming, toning flow than with Adriene on YouTube. With many different flows to choose from, Adriene can help you stretch and start your day or end it on a note that allows you to give back to you.
- Home Pilates workouts – While there are many home Pilates routines outlined on TikTok and Instagram, a great note is that many of these can be done without a Pilates machine. Slider discs can easily be subbed by washcloths, just as a hand towel can be subbed for a pulling band for abb workouts or leg lifts. Additionally, many trending home Pilates workouts now incorporate a wall such as in wall bridges. With just the use of towels and a wall, you can burn calories in an efficient Pilates routine – No reformer needed! @MovewithNicole on YouTube even outlines free Pilates workouts for your week to include variety.
- Wall Sits and Squats – In addition to using the wall for a curated routine, there are traditional wall sits that don’t take up a lot of time but are very effective. Also going back to basics, squats or side-stepping squats are a great way to get moving that you can even do in front of the TV or while you’re waiting for water to boil. Simple movements like these can help get you out of a rut and it’s great to start small if you have been sedentary this winter. You don’t want to push your body too hard too fast.
- Try a 28-day challenge – A 28-day challenge is a great way to help you get moving and commit to a workout plan. You may need to compare and contrast pricing with what you hope to get out of it and be sure to check your subscription before the 28 days are over to ensure it doesn’t automatically roll you over into a membership unless you are ready to work out from home longer term. These challenges are the perfect temporary reset for those colder months when you might veer away from your usual workout routine.
- Just Dance – Yes, that silly game you used to play at slumber parties! You can access dozens of free Just Dance videos that highlight the dance movements for you on your TV via YouTube and their repertoire even includes some of their newer songs with pop beats you’ll recognize. You can also throw it back while throwing it back to the early 2000s with their party jams.
There are numerous alternatives for going out in the snow and ice to a $35 Pilates class. A lot of these workouts involve simple movements that are very effective, and you could even have fun with it while getting some cardio dancing around your living room. Mick Kremling, a fitness motivator and wealth management author says “The only bad workout is the one you didn’t do” which can be a great mantra for 2025. To love your body and choose you this year you can hit reset on your routine while respecting your body’s boundaries to not push too far, but at the same time recognize the importance of movement for your mental health.
