Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow Finally  Makes Her Big Screen Debut

Supergirl/Kara

After the success of the DC Cinematic Universe reboot with James Gunn’s Superman in 2025, Supergirl will change the minds of the audience by showing she is far from her cousin Kal-El.

In the past, the Woman of Steel has been played by Helen Slater and Sasha Calle. Now, Milly Alcock will take on the role, and it seems she will be staying for a long time as the DC icon.

Based on Tom King’s comic, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film will be directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Noguiera. It will also feature the first live-action version of the anti-hero Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, a character included due to popular demand.

People who haven’t read the Supergirl comics may expect another action-packed superhero movie where Supergirl simply swoops in and saves the day.

What people often miss is that Kara deals with deep personal trauma and has a much more complex and difficult origin story than her cousin, Superman.

Who is Kara-El and What’s Her Story?

Unlike her solar-powered cousin, Kara endured a traumatic upbringing after witnessing Krypton’s destruction as a teenager

In this film, Supergirl is old enough to reflect on how her grief has shaped her over the past ten years. She clings to her dog Krypto, who is practically the last connection she has to her home.

Much like in John Wick, Krem of the Yellow Hills threatens Krypto the dog, prompting Kara to launch a rescue mission and fight to bring her closest companion home.

It pushes her into the path of an old friend, Ruthye. They share a bond: a strong hatred for Krem. By murdering Ruthye’s parents, he took away everything she had, mirroring the loss Kara had already endured.

What draws fans to Kara is her personality, and how she faces battles and struggles with mental health makes her relatable. Meanwhile, Superman often comes across as a flawless, almost untouchable figure who rarely shows pain or vulnerability.

Why Does This Movie Matter and Why Should You See It?

While the online critics are already trying to downplay the movie and hold it back from its potential hype, Supergirl plays a huge role in this next chapter that DC Comics is going in with their cinematic universe,  led by James Gunn himself.

This movie will breathe new life into the DC cinematic universe. DC often struggles to make quality films about its heroes, with Batman being the main exception.

This new universe offers fans a better chance to discover lesser-known heroes who haven’t yet gained mainstream popularity.

For example, last year’s Superman film introduced Mr.Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Metamorpho in live action for the first time. Fans loved how they looked on screen and flooded Gunn’s social media pages, asking him to make a solo Mr.Terrific movie because they found the character cool and unique.

This time around, we will be introduced to another anti-hero who will make his live-action debut. His name is Lobo, the psycho space biker who will be joining Supergirl this summer.

Lobo comes from the planet Czarnia, an alien bounty hunter known for his heavy drinking. He also happens to be the last of his species.

No other Czarnians remain because he personally wiped them out, unleashing a swarm of creatures on his own world. He did it out of pure greed.

Fans will have to wait until its release to see how Supergirl’s next adventure unfolds while crossing paths with Lobo and Ruthye, but the excitement for the Girl of Steel will definitely soar as we get closer to its premiere.
