Patrick Dempsey has been named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2023. The 57-year-old actor and race car driver is best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka “McDreamy,” on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
Dempsey was revealed as the Sexiest Man Alive on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night. He told Kimmel that he was “honored and flattered” to be chosen, but also admitted that he was a bit surprised.
“I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” he joked. “I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”
Dempsey is no stranger to being considered a sex symbol. He has been voted one of People magazine’s “Most Beautiful People” on multiple occasions, and he was also named one of Complex magazine’s “100 Hottest Men of 2011.”
Dempsey is the latest in a long line of actors to be honored with the title, which has been awarded annually since 1985. Previous recipients include George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Chris Evans, and Michael B. Jordan.
Dempsey’s selection has been met with mixed reactions. Some fans are thrilled to see him finally receive the recognition he deserves, while others believe that there are other actors who are more deserving of the title.
