Since his arrest during the week of September 17, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ expansive music catalog has spiked upward in streams.

According to data analytics company Luminate, Combs’s music generated an 18.3% increase in digital streams the week he was arrested.

Combs was indicted and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Prosecutors also indicated that Combs allegedly enticed victims to be around him to “fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.”

The case began back in March 2024 when allegations of Combs being involved in sexual misconduct started to surface. Rumors of his criminal behavior led to Homeland Security agents searching his mansions in L.A. and Miami as a part of the investigation.

Combs has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty in court, with his attorney stating that the mogul “is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal.”  Combs has been denied bail several times since appearing in court.

If convicted, the rap star faces at least 20 years in federal prison.

Although the mogul is one of the most prominent hip-hop acts in music history, his reputation is now under siege.

Life before bars

The New York native rose to fame in 1993 when he established his label Bad Boy Records. For 30 years, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has produced some of the most legendary acts in music such as Mary J. Blige, the Notorious B.I.G., Boyz II Men, and Faith Evans, just to name a few. Aside from being a successful label owner, Combs took to becoming an artist himself. His debut album, No Way Out, was released in July 1997 and garnered huge mainstream success. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release and sold well over 500,000 copies.

A year later, Combs was awarded a Grammy for Best Rap Album for No Way Out, breaking the barrier between music exec and artistry. Diddy went on to record five more studio albums throughout his career, making him a notable artist.

Aside from his contributions to music, he’s also been noted as a serial entrepreneur. The megastar is head of Combs Enterprises, an umbrella company for his portfolio of business investments that includes the clothing line Sean John, large stakes in television and film networks, popular liquor (Ciroc Vodka, Deleone Tequila), and much more. Combs, whose net worth is said to be at least $1 Billion, is also cited to have contributed large amounts of money to charities and organizations centered around education and social change.

Featured in 10 movies, 35 television shows, and numerous documentaries, Combs is one of the most powerful and influential people of this decade. Combs has been relevant in several arenas of the industry that have allowed him to become a household name.

A legacy tarnished?

There is no doubt that Diddy has contributed greatly to the sound of hip-hop – the aesthetic, the musical development, and even how it is produced today. But what will his unruly behavior cost him? Because the star is accused of such treacherous crimes, many believe that Diddy will not be able to return to the entertainment industry on a clean slate. Combs has put at stake the name he has created for himself, losing the respect and power he once held in the industry.

Only a completed trial and time will unveil the fate of Combs’ legacy — or lack thereof.
