In 2018, CNN began an investigative series titled As Equals. The series focuses on gender inequality and investigates under-reported topics such as mental health in mothers, relationship violence, and labor rights. The goal behind the series is to represent victims and identify solutions. After nine years of investigation, the series finale was released, exposing an ‘online rape academy’ used to harm a multitude of women.
The Finale: Exposing the ‘Rape Academy’
CNN’s investigative team went undercover on a messaging app known as Telegram and discovered a group chat titled “Zzz.” The group involved various men from around the world, all of whom shared advice on the best ways to drug, film, and rape their wives.
For some time, the team at CNN continued to converse with an individual who claimed to have used the given advice on his own wife. The man described gruesome details about events that took place within the bedroom. Videos and photos were shared within the group chat, proving the horrendous acts the men spoke of.
@cnn Following CNN’s investigation exposing global online ‘rape academies’, UK lawmakers are putting a spotlight on the platforms where these communities thrive. Motherless.com is home to numerous videos of so-called “sleep” content uploaded by users. There’s also a petition calling for major search engines to deplatform the site. CNN’s @saskyacnn reports. The men in the group began establishing businesses among themselves. Sedative and hypnotic drugs were sold internationally to members who wished to use them. Individual streaming channels also gained popularity as the men within the group began to post the encounters with their drugged wives.
The Rise in Drug Rapes
In 2024, internet-enabled abuse emerged worldwide as the drugging trial of Dominique Pelicot took place. The events that occurred between Pelicot, his wife, and the various men who raped her took the world by surprise in more ways than one.
Date rapes have become increasingly more popular due to the easy access to sedative drugs, the increase in opportunities, and the difficulty of detecting the drugs. Recent films and shows such as 13 Reasons Why incorporate drug rapes, which also plays a role in boosting their commonality.
Patriarchal Violence Within Society
Patriarchal violence is any kind of violent practice that negatively affects women and maintains the concept of male domination. It stems from the historical imbalance between genders, often portraying women to be inferior. Patriarchal violence can range from paying women a smaller wage to abusive tendencies in a relationship.
To this day, patriarchal violence is relevant within society as women continue to struggle with gender stereotypes and misogyny. Rape is a form of patriarchal violence that often gets dismissed for various reasons. Rape culture continues to be portrayed in the media and excused one too many times. The topic is sensitive and difficult to discuss, but if we do not speak up about rape culture, events such as the one discussed in CNN’s investigation will continue to occur.

Tips to Avoid Date Rapes and Drugging
- Keep a close eye on your belongings and beverages when in a public place. Never leave your drink unattended.
- Surround yourself with trusted friends and family when in social settings. A circle of supportive people can help boost your safety.
- Notice when someone has crossed a line or made you feel uncomfortable. If you begin to feel uneasy, leave the situation. Trust your instincts! In most cases, your body will alert you before you may even realize a situation is unsafe.
- No means no! Consent is extremely important. If someone refuses to respect your boundaries, leave and don’t feel guilty.
- Stay informed about common date rape drugs, the side effects, possible tastes, and other important information that could help you avoid a situation involving drugs. Knowledge is power!
The safety of women continues to be a concern for many as more disturbing situations arise. Thankfully, news outlets like CNN continue to investigate these issues and shed light on the events almost immediately.
