A Bad Cook’s Guide to Thanksgiving

For those of us who can’t cook for our lives, most of the year is no problem. Takeout, frozen meals, and the cooking of others work just fine. Then the dreaded text comes: What are you bringing to Thanksgiving? The panic sets in. But not to fear, there are plenty of tips that our less kitchen-inclined friends can lean on for the holidays.

Bust Out The Crock-Pot

It does not take too much skill to use a slow cooker. In fact, most recipes only require dumping in some ingredients and letting it cook for the hours you’re drinking and socializing with your loved ones. This makes Thanksgiving so much easier to succeed, and so much harder to mess up.

Crock-Pots have been around for some time, which means there’s no shortage of variety. They sell them at every size and price point, and you can make any recipe you’d want in one. When seasoned right and presented well, a slow cooker can steal the show at any holiday gathering.

Elevate Your Frozen Foods

If the prepping of ingredients feels like too much for you, don’t fret! Frozen foods can still have their own flair and even benefits. A frozen yeast roll with butter brushed on it, or even frozen chicken nuggets as a side or a kids’ table dish, can go a long way. Frozen veggies can be a good, often cheaper, precut alternative to include in your Thanksgiving dish this year.

Don’t Forget Dessert!

Desserts are some of the best parts of the holidays, and can be some of the easiest dishes to bring. There are plenty of no-bake options that are easy to assemble, and can even be cute and seasonally themed.

If you want to brave the oven, there are plenty of frozen and refrigerated options to bring to pop in the oven while dinner gets cleaned up. If all else fails, a gallon of vanilla ice cream is a safe addition to any dessert table.

Table Dressings Are Important Too!

If you’re not feeling brave enough (or you’ve lost the faith of the host), food is not the only thing you can bring. Dishes on Thanksgiving can be a real hassle that takes away from the family fun of it all. To avoid that altogether, consider making your holiday contribution a festive table setting. These days, holiday-themed paper goods are in abundance, and napkin folds or centerpieces can bring it to the next level.
