It seems that every year on social media there is a word people use to describe something. Last year, I feel like the word was whimsy. People were describing bringing back joy and whimsy in their lives. Even though it’s pretty early into the year, I have seen a word being thrown around a lot in conversation. That word is chic. Now, the word chic has been around for a while, but times have changed. How are people using the word now?
What Does “Chic” Mean?
Well, in the fashion sense, chic means a sophisticated or “smart” style. It is a polished look that truly embraces the meaning of “less is more”. A chic style is usually a tailored and minimal appearance that is meant to look effortless. Think of monochrome outfits (e.g all black or all gray) with the same or similar patterns to give the appearance of a refined look. It’s not overly flashy to create a classic and timeless fashion statement
How Are People Using it Today?
On social media, mainly TikTok, the word chic is used differently based on each individual. The word is not only used for fashion, but someone’s personality, their hobbies, or how they live. In a TikTok I recently saw, a girl was describing what she considered to be chic. These things included handwritten letters, having multiple candles In your home, and reading. So, it seems that chic is being used to describe anything unique to a person and less of a set style.
Another way people are using the word chic is by describing someone’s behavior. This could range from having a favorite color and wearing it all the time to writing in a journal. Once again, it depends on the person. People are describing others as chic for doing something that is special to them or showing off their personality. That’s what makes how chic is used today so fun and interesting!

Third Spaces
I know how easy it is to get caught up in our phones and the online world. So, I love when people have a designated spot besides their house to have fun. These are typically called third spaces or places (learn more about them in Gabriel’s article here!). At my college, there is a lake with a few picnic tables that my friends and I love to go to!
Perfume Samples
As a perfume lover I can testify they can be so expense. A few days ago, I ran into a woman and she was telling me about perfume samples. She says they are great for learning what scents you like and cost effective! That’s what makes it chic to me. Places like Ulta, Sephora, and Macy’s sell perfume sample kits. At Ulta and Sephora, some sets have a redeemable voucher which you can trade in for a full size bottle!
How Can You Be Chic?
What I love about this trend is that you don’t have to do anything new to participate unless you want to. You just have to be yourself. Following trends is a fun way to insert yourself in part of a shared identity of people online and in person. But, sometimes they can make us forget what we like. Spending time on who you are is what makes people appreciate you. So, go figure out what makes you chic!
