Revamp Your Winter Wardrobe With These DIY Upcycle Projects

3 pairs of knitted winter mittens

Unfortunately, as we move into colder weather, it’s easy for all of our outfits to start to look the same—a big puffer coat with a scarf, the thickest pair of jeans we own, and some gloves. We have to ditch our ripped jeans and many of our winter accessories are plain and boring. But does it have to be that way? Of course not! With this list of wintery, DIY upcycle projects, you can rewear old pieces and revamp your cold-weather closet.

Patchwork Ripped Jeans

Let’s face it, when the winter weather comes around, you are not reaching for your ripped jeans; it’s far too cold. So how can you get use out of this clothing piece in the winter months? Fill in the holes with patchwork! Either use some scrap fabric with an interesting pattern or design a crochet granny square. All you need to do is sew the panel inside the pants and voila—you’ve made your ripped jeans more weather-appropriate and stylish.

Lengthen Capris

Capris have been all the rage this summer and fall, but can we still wear our shorter pants when it gets colder out? There are several creative and colorful ways to add length to a pair of pants that are either short by nature or are too short because you’ve grown out of them. If you are a gifted crocheter, add a few rows of a crochet design, or even a row of granny squares, to the bottom of your pants. If your skills lie more in sewing, find a brightly patterned fabric to sew onto the cuffs of your jeans. Your pants will be longer and more visually interesting!

Patchwork Scarves

Since a scarf is one of the only things that will peek out from your coat, you have to make it interesting. If you have any old flannels or sweaters that aren’t doing it for you anymore, you can patch the materials together to make a cozy and unique patchwork scarf. Any old fabric or material works for this project.

Quilted Mittens

Have you ever gone thrifting and seen a cute and un-loved quilt? Well, if you want to repurpose that hard work, you can use a quilt (or any other fabric) to sew a pair of mittens. Just make sure to line the inside with some sort of fleece to keep your hands warm.

Frilly Socks and Legwarmers

Socks and legwarmers are a must in the cold weather. To add some more interest to the look of your boring socks and legwarmers, sew on some lace or a frill at the top. The lace peeking out of your boots will offer a beautiful detail to your outfit.

Swap Out Buttons

Cardigans and sweater vests are a winter weather staple. If you’re looking to spice up the look of a typical button-up top, you can swap out the garment’s original buttons for a set of mismatched vintage ones. These buttons are easy to find in bags at thrift stores, or maybe you already have a collection of funky vintage buttons you want to use!

Bead and Patchwork Embroidery

So many long-sleeved tops and crew necks come plain, without a design. If you’re looking to change up these wardrobe staples, you can revamp them by embroidering on a design of your own. There are so many fun ways to embroider, including traditional embroidery, beaded embroidery, and patchwork embroidery. This way, you can personalize your clothes, and everyone will know how creative you are.

We hope these sustainable and stylish tips help you gear up your wardrobe for the winter weather. Be sure to start upcycling now so you can be ready for the first snowstorm of the season!
