February 18th found pop culture fans in a frenzy between watching the BAFTAS, Britain’s most coveted film awards ceremony and the 2024 People’s Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California, marked with the absence of many nominees who opted to attend the BAFTAS instead. If you missed the People’s Choice Awards, fear not because we’ve got you covered with the most important highlights and more.
Simu Liu, notable for his role as superhero Shang-Chi in the Marvel Universe, hosted the awards ceremony. The actor looked particularly dashing in three different suits and led the ceremony with his handsome charm.
Here are the key highlights from the night:
Adam Sandler Honored with People’s Icon Award
Welcomed with a tender tribute from long time film colleague and friend Jennifer Aniston (who also won Drama TV Star of the Year), Sandler accepted the People’s Icon Award, having been announced the winner January 31. In classic Sandler humor, he centered his speech joking about how he misunderstood this win as the PEOPLE’S Sexiest Man Alive Award, which was actually awarded to Patrick Dempsey.
Throughout his speech, Sandler comedically prided himself on his sex appeal and ended on a heartfelt thank you to Anniston and his family. Though the speech was marked with awkward voice impressions, satire and Sandler’s messy stack of scripts, fans were cheerful nonetheless.
Barbie Sweeps the Floor
As a fan favorite movie this year, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made up for its two wins at the 2024 Golden Globes by dominating the People’s Choice with six wins including movie of the year, comedy movie of the year, movie performance of the year (America Ferrera) and male/female movie star of the year (Ryan Gosling & Margot Robbie). While Gosling and Robbie were in attendance at the BAFTAS, Ferrera was present and gave a speech. Rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, who also snagged new artist of the year, also took home a win for their “Barbie World” song collaboration with Aqua.
Taylor Swift Remains Fans’ Most Beloved Musician
Fans did not disappoint Swift, leaving her with four wins for female artist and pop artist of the year as well as recognition for her concert tour and being the social celebrity of the year. Swift’s boyfriend and Kansas City Chiefs football star Travis Kelce was awarded with an athlete of the year award, though neither attended the ceremony. Liu gushed about his affinity for Swift on the red carpet with Laverne Cox as well, revealing that he’d seen the singer on her Eras Tour over five times.
Other notable awards included The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes‘ wins for action movie and star of the year, awarded to Rachel Zegler. Oppenheimer also won drama movie of the year while being hyped up even more at the BAFTAS.
