Yvonne Orji,39, the star of the HBO comedy series Insecure, has been an open book about her personal life, including her decision to remain a virgin until marriage. In a recent interview on Chelsea Handler’s podcast, Dear Chelsea,” Orji, who is 39 years old, said that she is still a virgin and that she has no regrets about her decision.
“Are you still a virgin?” Handler asked Orji on the podcast, as seen in a clip above. “I am,” she confirmed. “Oh my God I love this,” Handler replied. “This is the most original guest we’ve ever had on. And what are you, 39? Oh my God. That dam is going to break one day, baby.”
The Insecure comedian jokingly replied and asked listeners to pray for her future partner because the wait has left her with a great deal of “pent-up energy.”
“Let me tell you right now…pray for him, whoever he is; ya’ll need to pray for him because there’s a lot of pent-up energy up in here,” the actress said.
Handler responded and added that she may “need a couple of men” when the time comes. The actress, who played Molly in Insecure, responded with a joke saying, “Yvonne went from being a virgin to polyamory.”
Orji’s decision to discuss her virginity publicly has been met with both support and scrutiny. Some applaud her openness and honesty, while others question her choice and how authentic she is about being a virgin since her character has plenty of sex scenes. However, Orji remains steadfast in her decision, emphasizing that her virginity does not define her and that she is comfortable with her choice.
In a 2017 interview with People magazine, Yvonne Orji shed light on her decision to wait for marriage: “Before any of [the fame] happened, I sat down with myself and with God and thought, When I make it, how do you want me to represent you while I’m here?” Later in the interview, she answered her own question: “It was like, Okay, I know why I’m here. It’s to make you proud.”
In terms of dating, Orji has been relatively private about her personal life. She was previously in a relationship with former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho in 2018, but they split by early 2019. Orji has not shared any news about dating since.
