Winter in the City: Chicago’s Holiday Hotspots

The weather is dipping into temperatures worthy of being called freezing and you’re supposed to go out for that girls night. What about your date? Is family fun going to be rerouted inside this time around? There’s a solution, and it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to suffer from cabin fever this holiday season. Bundle up, get your loved ones together, and get ready to face the cold. Here are some places to check out in Chicago—yes, especially in the winter!

The Christkindlmarket

If you’re not a Chicago native, then perhaps this first spot on the list is unfamiliar to you. The Christkindlmarket is a German holiday market with two Chicago-based locations: Daley Plaza and Gallagher Way. From vendors, yummy hot chocolate, to absolutely adorable Christmas-themed mugs, this is the city’s hotspot for festivities. Bring your friends and family to spread some German holiday cheer before December 24! Bonus: the market’s roasted nuts are a must try (trust me on this).

Mitsuwa Marketplace

Another market? Yes. Mitsuwa Marketplace is a Japanese supermarket with its own food court, cosmetics department, houseware section, and bakery. Located in Arlington Heights, this marketplace is a must see during the winter season. Escape the snow and nibble on some Doraemon pastries! Or wander at your own convenience. They’ve got a manga shop inside as well!

Downtown Ice Skating

Never been to Millennium park? Now’s the time to go, ice skaters. The Millennium Park Ice Rink makes for a perfect first date or group event. As long as the weather permits, the ice rink is open until February 1, 2026. You can reserve tickets online or brave the weather to rent skates in person. Bring your scarves and gloves out: you’ll definitely be needing them.

Winter Light Shows

If you enjoy a more lowkey approach to winter activities, you’re not alone. Lincoln Park Zoo offers its ZooLights show until January 4, 2026 for all ages. Likewise, the Morton Arboretum is organizing its thirteenth annual tree lights event. Both of these Chi-gems make for a perfect family outing with siblings, parents, or loved ones. Who doesn’t want to walk beneath pretty Christmas lights? Personally, I’m in.

Toast-Time on a Rooftop Igloo

If you’re in the mood for some indulgence but you don’t want to go out-of-state or plan an itinerary for your vacation, consider a rooftop igloo moment. Kennedy Rooftop and LondonHouse are two of many rooftop lounges that offer festive igloos for you to hang out in. Heated and cozy, these igloos overlook the Chicago Skyline. Perfect nighttime getaway, no?

Fight the cabin fever, N Crowd. I believe in you! Make that trip out to the city markets, the light shows, or even a rooftop lounge. The holiday hotspots are calling you, so make sure you pick up the call.
