Joelle Joanie Siwa, better known as “JoJo Siwa” made headlines after her interview with Billboard to discuss her newly released single “Karma”.  The 20-year-old singer, dancer, and now influencer, is no stranger to the limelight. Her fame began at the age of 9, after making her debut on the reality TV show “Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition” (Dance Moms spin-off) in 2013. Siwa reached the audience within the children demographic after creating her own YouTube account and regularly uploading vlogs, her music, and collaboration videos with A-listers like Kim Kardashian and her daughter North West.

“When I first signed with Columbia, I said I wanted to start a new genre of music…They said, ‘What do you mean?’ and I said, ‘It’s called Gay Pop.” – JoJo Siwa

JoJo Siwa’s original songs, “D.R.E.A.M”, “Boomerang”, and “High Top Shoes”, all consist of upbeat and cheery sounds and lyrics that were geared toward a kid audience. A much different alternative than Siwa’s newly released single “Karma”.

“Karma” has now gained over 16 million views on Youtube, in just five days. The music video consists of JoJo wearing a black, fitted, and revealing costume. Unlike her prior music videos, Siwa wears heavier, almost heavy metal-like make-up. In the music video, Siwa is surrounded by women dancers as she sexually thrusts onto them. Complete opposite themes, from her usual product.

JoJo Siwa discusses with Billboard on creating a “new genre of music” and her new single “Karma”.

JoJo Siwa’s Rebrand: Hit or Miss

Social media has been in an uproar by mixed reviews regarding Siwa’s new style of music and wardrobe. For years, JoJo Siwa has dressed in bright colors, and covered with bedazzled pieces from head to toe. Since she’s come out as being part of the LGBTQIA+, she’s rebranded from her familiar “good girl” persona. Another noticeable change, along with her wardrobe, is her style of music. In the same Billboard interview, JoJo Siwa paints Miley Cyrus as the main inspiration for her drastic change of stage appearance.

“Miley’s flip. Miley’s switch. Miley’s turn was the greatest thing I’ve witnessed with my own two eyes.” – JoJo Siwa

Siwa’s New Single “Karma” and the Reactions From the Public

Not only has the general public expressed their distaste for JoJo’s new look, but they have also created memes poking fun at JoJo Siwa’s appearance. Furthermore, in the same Billboard interview, Siwa commented on wanting to create a “new genre of music”, and it was called, “Gay Pop”. Many people took to TikTok and Twitter their opinions on how the genre already has existed, for decades.

What Does Jojo’s Future Look Like

For years, it’s been heavily discussed the major implications of child fame can result in deep internal issues, that then leads to a path of self-destruction. We’ve seen this time and time again, with successful artists like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, both heavily influential women in their own right, built their fame from childhood. However, they raised concerns from the general public when they made a drastic switch in their careers, stepping out of the ‘good girl’ image and taking on more of a sexualized approach in their music and roles. Siwa’s controversial attire and music raise the question of whether she’s on the same path. Whatever the case, we support Siwa’s unapologetic self-expression and venturing into uncharted territory that is not usually within her avenue.
