Why Gen Z Seems to be Struggling in the Career Department

Man and woman shaking hands.

Generation Z has been struggling with an emerging issue that is greatly affecting a large portion of United States citizens. The issue? Acquiring a job! According to a report done by Newsweek, nearly 15 percent of Gen Z identified as “unemployed and looking for work.”

Various factors are impacting the job-hunting process for recent graduates and those seeking employment. Gen Z is the first generation that has to compete with artificial intelligence for work. Members of the generation also struggle throughout the hiring process and are often turned away.

This article is meant to validate your struggles! It’s important that people are aware of the way things are impacting today’s job market. To put it bluntly, getting a job can be difficult, but the N Crew is here to break it down for you and provide support.

The Artificial Intelligence Takeover

Entry-level jobs are being stolen from members of Gen Z. Many companies are beginning to fill their entry-level positions with AI candidates, which makes it difficult for recent graduates to acquire an entry-level job. You might even notice an AI robot taking your order at the drive-thru!

Many companies choose to utilize AI due to the lower cost required for the same amount of work. The issue is steadily increasing, and many are worried that entire career fields may be taken over. AI seems to be slowly replacing writers, singers, actors, and more. Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated performer, has already caught the attention of many fans and puts other actors at risk of losing their jobs.

Artificial intelligence has also caused the application process to grow increasingly difficult for candidates. In order to make the process simpler for employers, many have begun to utilize AI to scan candidates’ profiles. This causes many applications to get “ghosted” or ignored, resulting in a lack of communication between the candidate and the company.

Never the “Perfect” Fit

Gen Z is also experiencing a hiring crisis due to the increased level of education they’re required to have. Many companies have enhanced their standards, hoping to connect with the “perfect” candidate.

As more organizations utilize AI in the interviewing stages, many candidates notice rejections. The flaw in the system lies in the fact that AI often denies candidates who aren’t 100 percent perfect for the role. What ends up happening is that companies will turn away acceptable workers without even knowing because of their AI system.

Requirements for most jobs have also increased. Many organizations now require candidates to have a certain amount of schooling, as well as years of experience. However, if a candidate is unable to acquire an entry-level job and cannot be hired due to a lack of experience, they’re left unemployed.

Remote Work Leading to Scams

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work has become more common. There are many benefits to working a remote job, which is why they’re often preferred by many candidates. The issue that arises is that when one considers remote work, there’s always a risk that one may get mixed up in a job scam.

On occasion, a remote job posting can be false; a way for an organization to gather your personal information. Candidates state that they receive many emails and requests for personal information, which can be a cause for concern.

Hiring Recession

Another reason Gen Z has such a difficult time finding a job is because of the hiring recession that began after COVID-19 hit the United States. When the country went into lock down, many companies took part in a hiring freeze, which meant they no longer hired people to work for them.

As time went on and many United States citizens continued to live within the walls of their homes, the hiring recession only intensified. Many people got laid off, job growth weakened, and companies began to realize that there was no need for a large number of employees.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic dwindled years ago, the effects of the post-COVID hiring recession still linger. Gregory Daco, Chief Economist, told CNBC, “We’re seeing a lot of pressure on the younger generation when it comes to this labor market.”

It’s getting harder to find work in the United States. The slowdown in #hiring comes as businesses navigate rapidly evolving federal policies on taxes, trade and immigration. In the backdrop, younger people are struggling to find work in software development and marketing roles that may be augmented or replaced by artificial intelligence. The Federal Reserve reduced its target for the federal funds interest rate by 25 basis points at its September meeting. The central bank warned of potential downside risks to jobs in the U.S. over the summer as federal data revealed a sharp slowdown in hiring. Find the full report:
