The American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) has announced its plans to honor Usher and Victoria Monét with two highly prestigious awards later this month. Usher is receiving the “ASCAP Voice of The Culture Award” and Victoria Monét is receiving the “ASCAP Vanguard Award.” These awards come after massive years in each of the artist’s careers.

While Usher has been a pivotal force in pop and R&B since 1994, 2024 has been the star’s biggest year in a long time. Most notably, Usher headlined the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show, performing some of his biggest hits for fans across the US. He also celebrated 20 years of his album Confessions, which was recently named as the 95th best album of all time by Apple Music. Super Bowl LVIII was the most watched TV program in history, according to the Associated Press, undoubtedly putting a massive spotlight on Usher, his legacy and his new album Coming Home, which was released on the day of the Super Bowl. ASCAP president Paul Willams justified honoring Usher, stating that “Usher has owned the R&B crown for decades, captivating listeners with his incomparable vocal chops and songs that span the R&B and pop genres.”

Victoria Monét, on the other hand, feels like an artist whose legacy is just getting started. Despite making music since 2014, including songwriting credits on tracks like “7 Rings” and “Thank U Next” by Ariana Grande, this year has marked a new chapter for Monét. She has rapidly gained traction with her hit single “On My Mama” and her album Jaguar II in 2023. Monét was also nominated for and won multiple Grammy Awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards earlier this year including R&B Album of The Year. She also won Best New Artist despite steep competition from the likes of Noah Khan, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll and Gracie Abrams.

In a press statement, ASCAP president Paul Williams explained the decision to give Monét the ASCAP Vanguard Award, emphasizing that Monét “has proven herself not only as an illuminating songwriter, but also as a flourishing artist and ASCAP member who continues to break barriers.”

Usher and Monét will be honored by the ASCAP in a night of celebration in Los Angeles on June 27.
