“I have run out of really good ideas for Nantucket novels, and I don’t ever want to put out a product that is subpar,” Hilderbrand said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. In 2021, she confirmed retirement rumors to Maria Shriver‘s The Sunday Paper, giving her readers a three-year warning.

For nearly 25 years, Hilderbrand has produced her Nantucket novels during summers on the beach. Now, at 54 years old, the author is ending her longstanding tradition with one final summer story.

In Swan Song, Hilderbrand follows the community of Nantucket as two wealthy strangers move into town. The locals are curious about the new residents, and apprehensive about how they flaunt their wealth. When the newcomers’ lavish house burns to the ground and one of their employees is missing, the entire island is fierce to protect their life on Nantucket and solve this mystery.

Hilderbrand has been largely successful, publishing 30 books in her writing career, with over 20 set in or around her hometown of Nantucket. She released her first novel The Beach Club in 2000, and her 2019 book Summer of ’69 was her first to debut at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Hilderbrand’s success isn’t limited to print. Her New York Times bestselling novel The Perfect Couple is being adapted for Netflix as a six-part series, one of several book-to-screen adaptations this year. The show will start this year, with a specific release date yet to be announced.
