The hotter months are coming in at full speed, makeup lovers, and who doesn’t love a sun-kissed look? Maybe tanning isn’t your thing, or you’re looking to switch over to bronzed goddess this summer season. Whatever your reason for wanting a cute, “I’ve been in the sun,” glow, a bronzer is going to be your new bestie! So, what makes a good summer bronzer? Is powder really better than cream? And what are the pale girlies going to do to avoid looking orange-y? Here is your guide to locking down a summer bronzer!

Shade Matching

Shade matching is probably one of the most dreaded parts of picking out the right bronzer. If you’re on the paler end, scanning the makeup aisle for something that won’t leave you looking orange is a feat in itself. If you’ve got a deeper skin tone, the tricky part is finding a shade that matches your undertone and gives you that natural sun-kissed look! How can you make the trip to your makeup store easier?

The three-shades darker rule will probably be your go-to on your search for the right bronzer. Aim to choose a bronzer between two and four shades darker than your complexion for a seamless application. According to Maybelline.com‘s “How To Apply Bronzer” with Meghan Nguy, bronzer application and choice are broken down in a few simple steps.

When it comes to what bronzer you should choose, Maybelline’s makeup tip is to “Opt for a color two to four shades darker than your skin tone—light skin will show any mistakes or streaks easily. Therefore, those with light complexions should stick with light, sheer, shimmer-free shades like City Bronzer in ‘Light’. Those with medium to deep complexions can get more daring, opt for bolder bronzes, and play with shimmer. But in general, bronzer isn’t meant to be a “look”— it’s best when you don’t notice it at all, and it just looks like your skin.”

Powder or Cream?

Contrary to popular belief, a powder bronzer might not be the long-lasting makeup champion this summer. As Luxury Beauty Brand Space NK explains on their website, both powder and cream bronzers can work for all skin types, “however, those with dry skin tend to use creamy bronzer while people with oily skin will be leaning towards a bronzing powder. In the summer, cream bronzers tend to be the winner to avoid a cakey finish.”

If you’ve got oiler skin, try adding a pressed powder on top of your cream bronzer after application to ensure a shine-free and even longer wear!

Application Time!

Now that you’ve shade matched and have appropriately chosen a bronzing routine for your skin type, it’s time to apply! With all makeup, there’s not a “one size fits all” rule at all. In recent years, applying bronzer in a “3” shape along your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline has become a popular technique. However, as long as you’re placing product on the high points of your face (i.e., your temples, cheeks, and nose), you’re on your way to a bronzed goddess look. Use your fingers, a sponge, or even a brush to help guide the product onto your face.

Remember to build up with your product for a more natural application! Happy bronzing, N Crowd!
