Apple TV+ will deliver a unique and captivating experience with its new series, Government Cheese, premiering on April 16th. This surrealist family comedy, led by award-winner David Oyelowo, mixes quirky charm with heartfelt drama and bold themes.
Set in 1969 San Fernando Valley, Government Cheese follows the Chambers family’s pursuit of bold dreams. Their world is a delightful, if chaotic, tapestry woven with aspirations that transcend the mundane realities of their surroundings.
“Invention is the reason why we called this show ‘Government Cheese,”
– David Oyelowo
Hampton Chambers returns from prison to a homecoming that’s anything but joyful. During his absence, his wife, Astoria (portrayed by Simone Missick), and sons, Einstein (played by Christopher Paul Richards) and Harrison (Di’Allo Winston), have forged an unconventional family dynamic. Hampton’s return acts as a catalyst, disrupting their established rhythm and unleashing a whirlwind of comedic and dramatic situations.

Jahi Di’Allo Winston, in a recent interview, aptly described the show’s chaotic yet harmonious nature, comparing it to a “gumbo.” Winston explained, “I feel like it’s like a gumbo because it’s so many different things merged into one. It’s like a melting pot of a bunch of different things. It’s grounded in reality, but there’s this quirky element.”
Government Cheese blends genres for an unpredictable, engaging experience.
One of the series’ central themes is the exploration of dreams and aspirations. Throughout the first six episodes, it becomes evident that each character is a dreamer, driven by unique goals that often clash with their present circumstances. This focus on dreamers raises a compelling question: why the title Government Cheese?
Oyelowo provides a revealing answer, drawing a powerful metaphor. “Invention is the reason why we called this show Government Cheese,” he explained. “Because anyone who’s experienced government cheese knows that’s a government-subsidized food that you’ve got to do something with it to get it to be all it can be. That’s why you end up with amazing grilled cheese sandwiches and macaroni and cheese.”
Oyelowo’s analogy captures the show’s essence: transforming the basic into the extraordinary with creativity and determination.
“Dreamers are dangerous.”
-Bootsy (played by Bokeem Woodbine)
However, Government Cheese also delves into the potential pitfalls of pursuing dreams. Bokeem Woodbine, who plays the character Bootsy, delivers a poignant line: “Dreamers are dangerous.” This statement highlights the inherent risk associated with chasing aspirations, particularly when those dreams become all-consuming.
Woodbine elaborates, “When you dream, you always risk disappointment. I’m talking about the dreams when you’re awake. When you’re imagining your future.”
Hampton Chambers’ journey highlights the vulnerability and heartbreak of pursuing ambitious dreams.
Government Cheese is a unique blend of comedy, family, and dreams. With a stellar cast and thought-provoking themes, this Apple TV+ series offers a fresh, must-see experience.
The show encourages viewers to reflect on their dreams, the risks they’re willing to take, and the power of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
