For years, many have been inspired by the eye-opening work of the pseudonymous British street artist known as Banksy. The artist’s work is nothing short of breathtaking, inspirational, and revolutionary. The activist shared their work with the world while remaining behind a secret identity.
Hoping the attention would remain on their work, the artist continued to refer to themselves as Banksy. As years passed, fans and critics were eager to discover who the person behind the expressive art truly was. Various organizations attempted to track down the individual but were unsuccessful. That is, until the Reuters crew seemed to have uncovered the mystery.

Who Is Banksy?
The artistic work of Banksy first appeared in England in the early 1990s. His pieces gained more attention in the early 2000s as he began to travel around the world. In 2002, the artist visited Los Angeles, where he held his first significant art exhibition titled Existencilism. About a year later, he showcased more work in London at his Turf War exhibition.
Banksy’s work often combines dark humor with graffiti-style art, executing his unique stencil-like techniques. Most often, the art incorporates political and social commentary that appears to be subversive in many ways. Initially, Banksy caught the eye of many with his bold images and anti-authoritarian messages, making them all anyone could talk about until his identity was brought up.

The Search for Banksy
In the early 2000s, Banksy’s identity was a topic of conversation that widely spread throughout the world, causing even more attention to be drawn to his work. Various interviews were conducted as theories began to swarm the internet. Finally, in 2003, BBC News was able to get a tiny hint as to who the artist may be. In the interview, the disguised guest claimed that his name was “Robbie.”
As the search for Banksy’s true identity continued, a British newspaper published a report supposedly revealing the artist. The Mail on Sunday claimed that his real name was Robin Gunningham. At the time, the theory was not confirmed, and fans continued to rave about the mystery that surrounded the bold artistry and its unknown creator.
@dailymailuk An investigation has ‘unmasked’ Banksy as Robin Gunningham, from Bristol. Speculation over the artist’s identity has once again resurfaced after Reuters investigated the mysterious artist’s past. From trips to Ukraine’s war-torn cities, to handwritten confessions to misdemeanours, and even letter’s from Banksy’s long time laywer, Mark Stephens to Reuters. Previously, Stephens had said Banksy has “been subjected to fixated, threatening and extremist behaviour.” He added unmasking Banksy would harm the artist and public too. #banksy #uk

In late 2022, the team at Reuters traveled to an abandoned apartment building in Ukraine. They discovered a group of people who eventually created a piece of art on the building. The investigative team connected the dots and realized that one of them had to be the infamous street artist, Banksy.
According to the team at Reuters, they were able to gain access to United States records that revealed the person they believed to be the artist. A handwritten confession letter was found along with other documents that proved that Robin Gunningham was connected to Banksy in many ways.

The Risks, the Secrets, & the Truth
After Reuters’ investigative team announced its theory involving Gunningham, Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, stepped in to speak on behalf of the unnamed artist. According to E! News, Stephens refused to confirm or deny Banksy’s true identity, claiming that the truth would only interfere with his art and put him in danger. Stephens believed that unmasking his client would cause nothing but chaos and harm to everyone involved.
According to Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s former manager, the name Robin Gunningham was swiftly detached from the topic of discussion when it was initially brought up. Evidently, in 2008, the man known as Gunningham legally changed his name to David Jones. Lazarides admitted that anyone who looked into Gunningham would be met with nothing, claiming that the real person behind Banksy would continue to change his name for his own safety.

Just when a team of investigators thought they’d be able to unmask the unknown street artist, Banksy’s team and loyal fans continue to keep his identity hidden. For all you know, Banksy could be living right down the street from you, hidden in plain sight.
