Sony Ends PlayStation Disc Support Causing Backlash From Physical Media Fans

Sony recently announced that PlayStation will no longer produce physical copies of newly released games. This announcement has caused backlash from fans, who are concerned about whether digital ownership is true ownership. With a recent resurgence in the popularity of physical media, this move could cost Sony a significant part of their customer base.

Sony’s Announcement and Controversies

PlayStation will discontinue production of all physical discs for new releases. Sony made the announcement regarding physical games on July 1 on their PlayStation blog, stating that they will phase out physical games by 2028. Sony cites a change in customer preferences, as digital games have dominated the market, as the primary reason for this change. This shift comes shortly after users reported that that digital Playstation games could be removed from users’ libraries. Back in April, users encountered a 30-day countdown, which would remove the game from the library if the user did not access it within that time. These rumors spread like wildfire, causing outrage, but Sony quickly shot them down. However, with this announcement coming not long after, the situation is not looking good to many longtime fans.

Sony’s Competition

Sony has disappointed many of their fans, largely due to their decision-making over the last few years. This began with controversies surrounding a push for live service games, which resulted in the catastrophic failure of Concord. Fans feel that Sony has mishandled its studios, such as legendary studio Bungie, forcing layoffs that have effectively ended support for the Destiny franchise and dented the team developing its newest title, Marathon.

With fans’ disappointment growing, it’s possible many will shift away from PlayStation as new console generations are released. Video game company Valve, most known for its gaming distribution platform Steam, has recently released the Steam Machine, a console that gives console players access to the platform that has dominated PC gaming for years. Sony’s primary competitor, Xbox, has also been receiving positive attention as its new CEO has made decisions fans support, such as a commitment to human-generated content and a step away from artificial intelligence.

Gen Z and Physical Media

Without the incentive of disc support, many users may move away from PlayStation.

Over the last few years, physical media has made a large resurgence, with many people collecting games and movies. This push has come as many consumers feel that a physical collection brings a much larger sense of satisfaction than a digital library ever could. According to The Los Angeles Times, Gen Z has reduced the decline in physical media sales by about half, due to Gen Z’s increased interest in DVDs and other media. This increase in physical media sales is in large part due to many young people becoming fatigued by subscriptions and streaming services. Iam8bit, a company that sells collectibles ranging from games to vinyl records, recently made a statement expressing its disappointment with Sony’s decision.

This announcement continues a streak of controversial decisions from Sony, which have worried or upset their consumers. However, it seems that ownership of games will not be threatened, as Sony has shot down the rumors that emerged a few months ago. It is more likely that Sony made this decision due to the sheer size of AAA titles, which cannot fit onto a disc. Nevertheless, this decision has isolated users who love to collect physical media, which could have catastrophic results for Sony down the line.
