With school coming closer to an end and summer arriving, many kids plan to sleep in late, play on their phones, hang out with friends, and more. During one of my summer breaks, I decided to pick up roller skating. I ended up loving this hobby so much that I have continued to skate for many years. I am currently in the process of hosting a skating club at my college, too. My Impala roller skates from Amazon have lasted me for many years. I highly recommend them as you will find they give you lasting benefits and you never know what friends you might meet while skating.

Roller skating is a great activity for the summer time to feel the nice breeze in the air and get a light workout in. According to Heath: Trusted and Empathetic Health and Wellness Information, roller skating is a full body workout that you can do inside or outside. This turns working out into a more fun activity. The low impact workout is great for students and young adults that do not have access to a gym. Just remember: always stretch beforehand and go at your own pace!
If you are nervous about falling, then go to a roller rink. Over the summer, skating rinks will have classes, events, field trips, and other theme days that will help ease you into the skating world. When hosting my club meetings, I found that some people are more comfortable when others are around. Most rinks have a general admissions and a rental fee which helps you decide if you want your own skates.

Speaking of owning a pair of skates, based on places like Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods, roller skates are cheaper than bikes. While bikes are the more popular outdoor activity, skating is more convenient and takes up less space than a bike. If you live in a walkable city, you can carry them in a bag or your arms. If you’re like me and don’t live somewhere walkable, you can keep them in you car. Skates are also easier to store when you are not using them and easier to maintain. Bikes require consistent upkeep while skates only need an occasional cleaning. Just don’t forget to wear a helmet outdoors, especially if you’re skating in the city. You may also want to consider other protective gear such as wrist guards while you’re learning.
Overcoming the fear of falling was the biggest struggle I had when teaching myself and others to skate. I noticed that practicing how to fall has helped me because falling is a normal part of learning. By practicing it, falling becomes something to expect and can help you prevent injury. As long as you get back up, keep trying, and have fun, you won’t have failed.
