Megan Thee Stallion’s New Album Dominates the Pre-Fourth of July Weekend

Houston rap icon Megan Thee Stallion has finally released her third, self-titled studio album MEGAN, dominating last weekend’s musical discussion. Before the record’s release, Megan released “HISS,” “BOA” and “COBRA,” each generating hype for the album, with the former hitting number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, MEGAN is more than just the sum of its singles, with tracks like “Rattle,” “Otaku Hot Girl” and “Where Them Girls At”  also quickly gaining momentum. The comments under Megan’s release post have been filled with a rush of love and admiration for the project.

Megan also recruited a variety of talent to give guest verses on the record, including Kyle Richh, Yuki Chiba, Victoria Monét, GloRilla, and UGK. Outside of the world of hip-hop, Megan Thee Stallion’s new album also gained a lot of attention among anime fans, specifically for her song “Otaku Hot Girl,” where Megan leans into her love of anime. She starts the song with an intro from Jujutsu Kaisen, voiced by English voice actor Adam McArthur, who delivers a variation of a line from the show but changes it to reference Megan.

To promote the record, Megan partnered with the CHICAS DIVERTIDAS food truck to offer free popsicles and tacos to fans in Chicago. Megan also capped off the weekend with an electric performance at the BET Music Awards, where she performed “HISS,” “BOA,” and “Where Them Girls At,” as well as joining her friend and collaborator GloRilla on stage to perform “Wanna Be.”

Even as the weekend ended, MEGAN showed no signs of slowing down. According to Pop Base, Monday, July 1 saw a 50% increase in Spotify streams of MEGAN, making it the biggest day of streams for the album so far. The record also remains the #1 album on Apple Music, outperforming other recent releases like Gracie Abrams’ The Secret of Us and Camilla Cabello’s C, XOXO. With this promising start to MEGAN’s release cycle, and the Hot Girl Summer Tour raging on, Megan Thee Stallion has already left a thorough impact on the popular music landscape of 2024.
