Lupita Nyong’o casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s 2026 film adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic The Odyssey has sparked debate online.

Set to release July 17, the star-studded cast includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, John Bernthal as King Menelaus, Zendaya as Athena, Anne Hathaway as Penelope and more.

Although many expressed excitement about the film’s range of talent, others are already picking the film apart. Nolan has been accused of “cultural erasure” and “race-swapping” for his casting choices.

Billionaire and CEO Elon Musk commented on detractors’ X posts about the film, stating that Nolan “lost his integrity.”

This was in response to this specific X post by user @iterintellectus:

Helen of Troy—a fictional character and the daughter of Zeus—is the most beautiful woman in Greece. She is also to blame for the Trojan War, which ends at the beginning of Homer’s tale.

Nyong’o, a seasoned Kenyan-Mexican actress and Oscar winner, has proved herself a generational talent in multiple roles—Us, the Black Panther film series, Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and more.

Discourse and pushback came for Musk’s reply. Many users tied the obsession with “historical accuracy” to racism and disregard for the film’s mythological premise.

This is not the first time a Black woman has been cast as Helen of Troy. In 1950, legendary actress Eartha Kitt played Helen of Troy in Orson Welles’ stage production of “Dr. Faustus”. An interpretation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’sFaust,” this was Kitt’s first starring role.

This role later rocketed Kitt into stardom on both the stage and screen.

Times of controversy concerning casting people of color have remained a large point of contention to this day.

Nyong’o is just the latest example of decades of Black women facing mistreatment by the public when cast for previously white roles.

Singer and actress Halle Bailey received similar waves of backlash following Disney’s 2019 announcement of the now 25-year-old reprising Ariel in the live-action 2023 film The Little Mermaid.

Bailey’s casting garnered so much hate that the hashtag #NotMyAriel started trending on various social media platforms.

She later commented on reactions to the casting in a 2023 cover story with The Face, saying, “As a Black person, you just expect it, and it’s not really a shock anymore.”

“I know people are like: ’It’s not about race.’ But now that I’m her…People don’t understand that when you’re Black there’s this whole other community,” she added. “It’s so important for us to see ourselves.”

The Little Mermaid continued to receive mixed reviews but was a worldwide box office hit at $569.6 million.

Actresses like Nyong’o, Kitt, and Bailey are large figures that represent generations of a marginalized community through media representation. They are all extremely talented artists who will continue to make history for the Black community in film and television.

Nyong’o hasn’t yet commented on the internet’s reactions to her casting, nor has Musk responded or further commented on his X posts.
