HBO teased the upcoming third season of its hit show Euphoria in its new trailer this month. The third installment of the series will be released on April 12th, with a whole new timeframe and a fresh cast of characters. The show has been controversial since its inception, and this season will be no exception.
What We Know
Show-runner Sam Levinson confirmed the rumored time jump for the new season at an HBO Max event in December. A five-year time jump felt like a major change to the structure of a high-school show. However, if an almost 30-year-old Zendaya was still trying to play the same 17-year-old she was playing four years ago, fans would likely have an issue with that too. Revisiting plot lines five years later gives these characters enough time to have started their adult lives.
While much of the cast will be new and many members the same, we will be excited to see that television’s most toxic couple will still be together. That’s right, Nate and Cassie are tying the knot in season three. We can tell from the trailer that they will be navigating some tough issues together, such as Cassie’s, played by controversial bombshell Sydney Sweeney, new OnlyFans endeavors. Sound familiar? That would be because of the storyline’s similarity to Kat’s in season one, where she becomes a cam girl. It will surely be a completely different storyline, especially with Kat’s actor, Barbie Ferreria, gone from the cast, but the choice still feels a little lazy.
Nate, played by Hollywood darling Jacob Elordi, will hopefully be at least only Cassie’s problem this season. We only saw his high school girlfriend, Maddie, played by Alexa Demie, in the new trailer once. However, she was seemingly talking about Jules, Hunter Schafer’s character, about her sugar daddy. I don’t want to get too critical before the show’s release date, but can these writers come up with a storyline for these girls besides toxic relationships with men? The gritty, “film noir,” approach to the new season lends to a commitment to the over-the-top provocative nature of the show thus far, and we will see what the writers do with it.

Brand New Cast
Many people’s issue with the end of season two was the seemingly impossible cliff-hangers. Some characters died, some were arrested, but what was Rue going to do with the tens of thousands of dollars owed to a powerful dealer, especially seeing as the suitcase of drugs to sell was flushed down the toilet?

Season three will pick up with Rue working South of the border in Mexico. It seems a whole new cast will come out of her new storyline—including Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, James Landry Hébert, and Darrell Britt-Gibson. Let’s look at more casting changes that fans can expect to see in season three.
The most disappointing cast member missing this season will be Angus Cloud, and his role of beloved drug dealer Fezco. Cloud passed in July 2023 from an accidental overdose following the death of his father. This real-life event solidified the fate of Fez, who was shot at the end of season two—another major cliffhanger. Fans will hate to see the character go, including Levinson, who rewrote the character’s death at the end of season one because he loved the actor.

Although the romance between Fez and Lexi, Maude Apatow’s character, is done in the show’s plot, I’m sure it will be revisited. Lexi will pick up as an assistant to a new character played by action movie star Sharon Stone.
Other star-studded new additions to the cast include Trisha Paytas, Rosalía, Eli Roth, and Natasha Lyonne. Fans are also excited to see the return of Chloe Cherry, Colman Domingo, and even Eric Dane, despite his recent ALS diagnosis.
Despite the questions raised, a trailer is just a trailer. The new era for Euphoria will certainly be different from previous seasons, but it may even be better. Regardless, finally having a conclusion for these characters with whom many, me included, spent their teenage years, will be satisfying. N’Crowd: How are we feeling about this upcoming season?
