In a typical iconic and unbothered Lorde fashion, Lorde blessed us with a glimpse of her new song “What was that,” or “WWT” on TikTok, April 9th, in a faceless video of her running through the streets of Washington Square Park in a baggy white top, jeans with large headphones on. Her TikTok is giving all the melodramatic flair her fans can only hope for, and the song has the essence of a nostalgic electropop dream.
Posted to a TikTok account that originally had no following, the video has quickly grown her 398.1k followers in a week. As a follow-up to confirm suspicions, Lorde has now posted the song on TikTok again to tease her new single with proposed cover art shot by Talia Chetrit. In the photo, Lorde is wearing red and her face is covered in water droplets. She looks stunning and all natural as she looks into the future of her new pop album. The 15-second snippet of her new song on TikTok resembles that of her Melodrama and Pure Heroine albums, with an electropop sound, and it already seems to be an absolute banger.
“What Was That” is a great pump-up song with a feel-good vibe for the whole chorus, which is the only part leaked. It’s taking fans back to 2017 and is the perfect window into Lorde’s 4th studio album following her last album, Solar Power released in 2021. There’s currently no indication of what the album will be called, but Lorde announced on April 16th that the single will be out “soon,” and shared a presale link. Lorde also seems to have wiped her social media for the promo for this new album and what sounds to be a new era for her entirely.
This past weekend, Charli XCX brought Lorde out on stage at Coachella to sing their song “Girl, so confusing,” from Charli’s BRAT album and Charli hinted that a Lorde summer was upon us. Then, Lorde sent the voice note below to her top fans via WhatsApp to thank them and share some updates and further play into the mystery of what is coming up for her as an artist. She confirms that there will still be a place for her famous newsletter, but that she appreciates the convenience and realness of a voice note, explaining that this is how she communicates all day.
This personal recording is so typical of Lorde and tracks with her relevance and relatability to her fans. It’s such a fresh approach that helps take away the barriers between an artist and their community and offers a sense of vulnerability as Lorde toys with what is to come and shares updates in a way that engages her fans.
I don’t want to be stressing about capturing the moment with the right language, like, what if it’s just about saying it, and maybe getting it wrong, and that being ok – ya know?
– Lorde
Lorde illustrates that it’s ok to get it wrong and alludes to a moment at Coachella where she knew everything was about to change and that she’s bringing her fans for the ride. It was a thoughtful way to go about introducing this new form of communication, where she will hopefully hint release dates soon.
