Crocheting has been around for many years but has its moments in the spotlight. It was a hobby many people picked up during the pandemic. People of all ages love this famously considered “grandma” hobby. But, how do they get into the craft? Trying new hobbies can be very intimidating. This is mainly because of how much time and energy crafting requires. Let’s go over what you need to get started!
Where to Buy
You will be able to find the majority of supplies from basic retailers. This includes Walmart, Target, Amazon, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby. Your supplies will include mainly two things: yarn and a hook. The prices will also depend on where you get your supplies. After a while, many people have their preferred store for their supplies. For me, it is Walmart and Michael’s!
Patterns
YouTube is the perfect place to find patterns as a beginner! I recommend starting with something simple like making a square or a circle. This will teach you the basic stitches you will need for the majority of your projects.
If you prefer written patterns, LoveCrafts and AllFreeCrochet are also great websites. Many patterns will explain different terminology as you go on. So, do not worry if you are not familiar with some!
Some advice for patterns is to mark where you are and keep count if you take a break in between. Many beginners and experts will fall victim to losing track and having to start over!
Cost
The great thing about this hobby is that it can be as cheap or expensive as you would like. However, as a beginner, It won’t be as expensive for you. The cost increase will mostly come from the size of your projects. So, look around to see what stores fit your price range the best!
Benefits
The Anxiety Resource Center points out a few benefits to crocheting include:
- Reduces stress
- “Distracts” the brain
- Can be taken anywhere
The craft is great way to be off your phone. The repetitive motions make you forget that you are crocheting which soothes many people. Crocheting can also take much longer than you think, especially if you are a beginner. A 5 minute video may actually take around 20 minutes to complete. Therefore, the craft is a good way to pass the time. So, N’Crowd, let this craft ‘hook’ you and start crocheting!
