Less Than a Week Out From Its Release, Inside Out 2 is Breaking Box Office Records

Eight years after the release of Pixar’s beloved Inside Out, sequel Inside Out 2 is smashing box office records. In its first weekend, the film has already overtaken Dune: Part Two, earning $155 million, making it the second largest domestic debut in Pixar’s history, behind Incredibles 2.

The film follows the original’s protagonist Rylie into her teenage years as new emotions begin to arise. Alongside classic characters Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust, newly developed emotions Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment are giving Rylie a whole new host of feelings to navigate.

So far, the film has received outstanding reviews from both audiences and critics, who have praised the film for its charm, relatability and fun. Viewers have especially enjoyed new character Anxiety, voiced by Stranger Things Maya Hawke, for resonating with audiences of all ages.

The original Inside Out was similarly loved by audiences and critics alike, earning a whopping 98% tomatometer score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Internationally, the film has shattered records, becoming the largest international animated film opening of all time. With a budget of 175 million, the film already almost broke profit in its first weekend, and now has grossed over 300 million globally. Inside Out 2 is the first film since last year’s Barbie to break 100 million in its opening weekend.

Since Covid and the rise of streaming platforms, movie theaters have struggled to bring in audiences, often instead releasing films digitally. During the pandemic, Pixar released Soul, Luca and Turning Red directly to Disney+ rather than premiering the films in theaters. The company made its return to theaters with Lightyear in 2022, which performed poorly at the box office globally. Inside Out 2 is Pixar’s most successful movie theater release since the pandemic, giving the studio a head-start as they prepare for new releases, like Toy Story 5, expected to premiere in 2026.

In recent years, Pixar seems to be continually creating sequels, or opting to expand on previous universes, like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and more rather than creating new stories. Though audiences are tiring of filmmakers — especially in animation — constantly redeveloping old stories instead of investing in creating more films, Inside Out 2’s release is a tribute to just how lucrative and loved sequels can be.
