Lactose Intolerant, But You Love Egg Nog? We Have An Alternative Holiday Nog You Should Try!

Just because the holidays are over does not mean you can’t enjoy holiday drinks. If you’re like me then you’re probably finishing off the champagne, pumpkin spice flavored cocktails, and maybe even egg nog. However, I am one of those people who cannot have too much dairy for two main reasons. One, it’s not good for my eczema, and two it does not agree with my stomach! Now that’s not all that bad considering I already do not like the taste of dairy products such as eggs or milk, I may do cheese, but that’s if I have a craving. However, it does become a problem for me around the holidays when I want to enjoy a glass of Egg Nog with Crown Royal Vanilla Whisky.

For years I felt like I missed out on my favorite seasonal drink and it was annoying watching other people enjoy it while I had to sit by and just long for the taste of its flavors: nutmeg, cinnamon, sweet, and creamy. Until this year, I found an alternative! If you enjoy egg nog but you’re like me, then you want to keep reading because I am about to put you on to something that will always give you a reason to look forward to the holidays. More importantly, you can enjoy it for New Year’s Eve!

Egg Nog Alternative One: Almond Breeze Nog

Long story short, I was doing my daily grocery shopping at HEB with my daughter when I came across this product. As I’m browsing the milk section in search of Oat Milk, I look to my left and see this beautiful gem! “Wow! Look at that baby girl!” I said to my daughter. “They have a dairy-free Egg Nog!” The lady to my right grabbing her Almond Milk looked at me like I was crazy as if to say, “You didn’t know that was a thing?” Without hesitation, I grabbed Almond Breeze’s Almond Milk Nog and threw it into the cart! I couldn’t wait to get home and try it, but before I could I needed to stop by Total Wine first to pick up Crown Vanilla Whisky.

By the time the evening had arrived and my little one was down for bed, I cracked open that Almond Breeze Nog! I went to the pantry and grabbed my rose-gold cocktail mixer. Grabbed the Crown from our bar (it’s not really a bar it’s just where we hide the alcohol for the little one, which is the very top of the pantry) and went straight to work. Activating our ice machine from the refrigerator, I let the crushed ice fall into my mixer, poured two shots of whiskey, and poured half a cup of Almond Breeze Nog into the mixer, and I began shaking.

Pouring the nog and whiskey mix into one of my husband’s whiskey glasses I thought to myself, “oh yeah…this is going to be good!” And it was! It tasted exactly like egg nog and the best part, I didn’t have an upset stomach after drinking it! Almond Breeze Nog is not just dairy and gluten-free, but it’s also sweet, and creamy, and has the ideal holiday flavors you could ever want, cinnamon and nutmeg. The thing that I enjoyed most about this brand was the consistency. If you’ve ever had regular egg nog then you know it’s naturally thick. Now unless you like it that way then that’s your personal preference. However, if you’re like me then you’ve had to add water or whiskey to loosen it up. Almond Breeze’s Almond Nog has the perfect consistency! It’s not too thick and it’s not too watery!

You can find this brand in any store including, Kroger, Target, HEB, and Albertsons.

Egg Nog Alternative Two: Califia Almond Milk: Holiday Nog

After stumbling across Almond Breeze’s Nog, I intentionally went searching for another dairy-free alternative brand that is used in my household, Califia Farms. Just like Almond Breeze, I have my pros and cons when it comes to Califia Farms Holiday Nog. Let me start with what I enjoy the most about this dairy-free holiday nog.

The moment you open the bottle you can immediately smell the flavors and spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, with a hint of ginger. It pairs perfectly with Largo Bay Vanilla Spiced Rum and a sweet snack such as cheesecake or Ginger Snaps (I would go with Ginger Snaps).

My only con for this brand is that it’s too thick. Unlike Almond Breeze’s brand, which has the perfect consistency, this one has too much consistency. To break up the thickness, I had to add a little bit of ice and let it water down just a bit.

However, it did meet all of my expectations of sweetness, spices, and flavors. Califia Farms Holiday Nog can be found in Kroger, Target, and Sprouts.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Holiday Nog

Just because Christmas is over does not mean you can’t still enjoy holiday nog. This is the perfect time to get to the stores and buy these brands before they sell out. Treat yourself one last time to a healthy choice before the season is over, and who knows maybe your friends will love it too.
