How to Look Chic in Winter Weather

Winter Fashion

If you are a part of the lucky few who have been able to evade the winter storms and the cold front they brought along, we envy you! Even though we’re winding down from the winter flurries, we still have to bundle up during this cold February month— and maybe you’re cold, but you don’t need to look it! Here’s how you can make sure your outfit is just as interesting on the outside as it is underneath the coat.

Underneath

It would be impossible to write about layering, without mentioning the key component. Putting thermal layers underneath both your top and pants will ensure you stay warm all day, but layering on top of those is also extra important. Leg warmers, even if they aren’t there to be seen, can help insulate your legs as well.

Tops

An interesting collar is sometimes the only thing that will peek out of your coat. Layering up with turtlenecks or button-down shirts underneath sweaters and sweatshirts will be a way to give people a clue that underneath the coat is a super cool outfit. This trick doesn’t always apply, sometimes our scarves cover our collars— but nonetheless, this will keep you warmer and add some visual interest.

Outerwear

Long coats keep more of your body warm, but they cover up more of your outfit. A simple fix? Make the coat a standout piece. Vintage coats tend to be more colorful or interesting, and also so much more sustainable. Even if you wear the same cool vintage coat every day of winter, people will be more focused on how interesting the coat you’re wearing is, than by the outfit repeating. Not only does it keep you warm, but it’s fashionable in itself.

Cuff Your Jeans

Assuming that you are layered up beneath your outer-layer of pants, and hopefully wearing boots, then a dramatically cuffed jean may be just what you need to make a boring outfit more interesting. Playing on texture and a variety of color, this will look on the outside like an intentional style choice despite the cold, but you’ll know that you’re layered enough to stay warm.

Spice Up Your Accessories

Scarf Balaclava

As we all know, balaclavas are back and better than ever! But instead of buying one or making one, use something you already have. Oversized scarves are the simplest way to achieve the balaclava look and simultaneously keep your ears and neck nice and toasty.

Doubling as a hat that doesn’t flatten your hair and a cute vintage find, tying your vintage headscarf this way can really ramp up your outfits. Pair this with a cute pair of vintage-y sunnies, and you will be channeling Audrey Hepburn!
