Going Out Alone Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

When I graduated high school I challenged myself to go out more. Since I was leaving home for college, I wanted to be prepared for being by myself. It took me a while being comfortable in public alone.

Why I Go Out Alone

Cost Effectiveness

A lot of the time when we’re out with other people, we feel the need to spend when we don’t need to. There have been plenty of times where me and my best friend have encouraged each other to buy something we don’t need. I don’t feel that when I’m out by myself. So, I save money when I’m not with people.

Time

Do you have a friend that’s really early? Or really late? Well, when you’re by yourself, you aren’t on a time limit. I know I get tired way earlier before my friends. It sucks when the hang out ends early because of someone’s schedule or mood. When you go alone, you know exactly when you want to leave and don’t have to wait for anybody.

Comfort

I love dressing nice for casual events as much as the next person. But, sometimes I don’t have as much time to do my hair or put on a outfit. While you should always dress for you, It can be nice not thinking about what your friend is going to wear. Going someone alone removes the pressure of dressing up for others. So, trade in those jeans for sweats!

Where to Go

The Movie Theater

If you’re just starting to go out by yourself, movie theaters are the perfect place to start. Many people are scared to go out because they think people are looking at them. Movie theaters take away from this nervousness because everyone is paying attention to the movie!

Restaurants

Going to a restaurant by myself was probably the biggest jump. I know it’s easy to believe that people are judging you. However, going to a restaurant by yourself also teaches you how to be sociable and stand up for yourself. Recently, I had to send back food because it was not what I asked for. I had to speak up for myself because I was alone which is something I struggle with. Going to a restaurant alone has helped me find my voice!

What I’ve Learned

Learning how to be by myself has been one of the best skills I’ve learned so far. Getting over the anxiety of going out alone has helped me understand myself and be more confident. Here are some things I’ve learned:

  • No one is looking at you
  • Your day goes as YOU plan
  • No one knows you as well as you know yourself

Getting out of your comfort zone can be nerve wreaking but so rewarding. Where will you explore by yourself next, N’Crowd?
