On November 12, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) held its 16th annual Women Behind the Music event. Each year, the ASCAP uses the event to celebrate and empower female trailblazers from all facets of the music industry, from singers and composers to label executives and managers. Hosted at The Fleur Room in Los Angeles, this year’s festivities were helmed by the ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul Team, who chose to honor Grammy-winning singer Coco Jones, Grammy-winning songwriter Autumn Rowe and Emmy-winning composer Amanda Jones.

Each of this year’s honorees are accomplished in their own right. Coco Jones, who revealed that she joined ASCAP at just 12 years old, took home the 2023 BET Award for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and, just earlier this year, snagged her first Grammy for Best R&B Performance for her hit track “ICU.” Autumn Rowe has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music (including Diana Ross, Dua Lipa and Leona Lewis) and won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Album for her work on Jon Batiste’s We Are. Amanda Jones is the first African American woman to be nominated in the Primetime Emmy score category and won the 2023 Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition and Direction on two episodes of Apple TV+’s Home.
The trio join a star-studded list of previous honorees. Kandi Burruss, Kelly Roland, Victoria Monét, Salt-N-Pepa and Summer Walker are just a handful of the accomplished women previously recognized by the ASCAP and Women Behind the Music.
“Over the past 16 years, ASCAP Women Behind the Music has given us a platform to celebrate exemplary women and their incredible achievements as leaders in the music industry,” said Nicole George-Middleton, ASCAP Senior Vice President of Membership and ASCAP Foundation Executive Director, ahead of the event. “We are so proud to recognize the women who have made such a profound impact through their leadership and art, and we hope to empower the next generation to do the same.”

George-Middleton presented the award to each of this year’s honorees. To top off the festivities, DJ and producer Niyah provided music while guests sipped on themed cocktails, including “Coco’s Cosmos.” See more photos from the event in the gallery above.
