I see that clutter of yours. Yes, you! It’s been far too long since you’ve last done a thorough cleaning of your room, and it’s about time you set aside some time for it. National Clean Up Your Room Day was June 6th, and although you might be showing up late to the cleaning party, you can still leave with some great tokens of cleaning advice. Consider these simple and effortless habits to keep a cleaner space!
Habit 1: Part Ways With Those Clothes

No, we’re not telling you to throw away your entire closet. Take a look at your wardrobe and seriously reflect on what you wear daily. That sweater you bought last year and still have yet to wear? It might be a good idea to let it go into the “give-away” pile.
Looking through your clothes doesn’t have to be a headache: sort the clothes you haven’t worn in over a year into one pile, and keep your special event outfits and daily wear in another. This simple rule will make for a quick and less stressful organizational tool!
Habit 2: Think Bins or Baskets

Some of the clutter we’re all guilty of having is knick-knacks. That travel-size lotion? The countless hair ties that end up at the bottom of your drawer? They all find ways to add up, and at the end of the day, they’re just more things to clean up.
Try running over to your local store and take a nice walk through the home-goods section. We bet you’ll find a cute organizer or two that you can toss hair styling products, makeup, or skincare into. This way, you’ll be able to section out your belongings and make for a more efficient way to clean your space!
Habit 3: Prioritizing Your Clutter

The real challenge here with decluttering your room is keeping up with cleaning! A clean space is equivalent to a clean mind, according to several studies. An article by Stanford BeWell references a research study by Princeton that displays that “you will be less irritable, more productive, distracted less often, and able to process information better with an uncluttered and organized home and office.”
To successfully maintain a decluttered space, Stanford BeWell recommends that individuals prioritize their “to-dos” into three categories. These include: hard things that structure future action (such as setting up a cleaning day with a friend for decluttering), hard things that reduce behaviors to behaviors (like purchasing new file folders and labels to help with organization in the future), and hard things that increase your skills for success (this includes finding success in your decluttering journey, no matter how small the victory, or spending a couple minutes a day organizing!).
Habit 4: Celebrate the Small Victories!

As mentioned in habit 3, if you’ve spent even a few moments rearranging your desk or vacuuming your room, you’ve got to celebrate! That’s what National Clean Up Your Room Day is all about. Creating clean habits for your life doesn’t have to take away any joy: be proud of yourself!
