Awards season is officially over. This year marked a defining moment for Black representation and excellence in the film industry. With films like Sinners, making cinematic history, and One Battle After Another, winning major categories. Black creators and artists finally received the recognition they deserved, finally being seen. Missed this season’s awards? Here is a recap of some of the awards season highlights celebrating Black excellence.
At the start of awards season, Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, was already making cinematic history. The film became the most nominated film at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars) and at the 57th NAACP Image Awards.

Sinners received a total of 16 nominations at the Oscars, 18 at the 2026 NAACP Image Awards, 17 at the Critics’ Choice Awards, 13 at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), and seven at the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards. However, Sinners is making history with its record number of nominations. Sinners also won in major categories.
At the Oscars, Sinners won four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, making Jordan the sixth Black actor to win at the Oscars. The film also won Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, making him the second director to win, after Jordan Peele for Get Out.

Sinners won for Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapa, becoming the first woman and woman of color to receive the award. The film also won Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson.
These wins marked a significant moment for Black representation in the film industry. Still, many felt the film deserved more love. Disappointed that Delroy Lindo, 73, did not receive an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
A well-deserved nomination and Lindo’s first-ever Oscar nomination. Lindo delivers a memorable performance, bringing complex characters to life. In the film Sinners, Lindo played Delta Slim, a troubled yet gifted alcoholic blues musician disturbed by his past. Lindo’s character Slim held cultural significance in the film. Slim represented a cultural tie to the African American history and the historical cultural significance of the blues.
However, many felt Lindo did not receive proper recognition for the second time by the Academy. At the 93rd Academy Awards, many thought Lindo was snubbed of an Oscar for his role in Da 5 Bloods, directed by Spike Lee.
Despite Lindo’s loss, Sinners still took home multiple wins and achieved major cinematic milestones at various award shows. Following his win for Black Panther in 2018, Coogler became the first director to win Best Ensemble for the second time at the Actors Awards.
Sinners also made history as the most decorated film by a Black director at the BAFTAs with three wins. Wunmi Mosaku also became the first Black British woman to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sinners.
Following the success of Sinners, One Battle After Another also dominated the awards this season.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film led in awards for most ceremonies, with historic wins. Sinners followed close behind.
Although the film is not necessarily centered on Black narratives. The film explores themes of political resistance and the ongoing struggle against systemic racism, starring Teyana Taylor and Regina Hall.
At the Oscars, One Battle After Another received a total of six awards. These included Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Casting, a new category added this year.
One Battle After Another also won the most awards at the BAFTAs with six wins. These included Best Film, Supporting Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing.

Taylor also won her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Perfidia in Beverly Hills. Taylor delivered a powerful speech dedicated to Black girls, accepting her award.
“To my Brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter, and our dreams deserve space,” said Taylor.
Taylor’s speech served as a reminder that this awards season was not just about the win. It was also a moment of empowerment, recognition, and inspiration for Black talent and the next generation of creatives.
Marking a significant moment for Black representation, this awards season highlighted both individual milestones and a broader shift within the industry. From Sinners’ historic achievements to One Battle After Another’s leading in awards. Black voices, narratives, and talent are no longer just being seen. Black stories are being honored, celebrated, and given the visibility they have long deserved. These films demonstrate that stories with real social impact, powerful messages, and Black perspectives can be recognized and celebrated on some of film’s biggest stages.
