Did you know that the beginning of Spring coincides with the Astrological New Year? While our annual calendar begins in January, the astrological calendar begins on March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere. With the spring season marking the time when flowers start to bloom, it is contradictory that our annual year is in the middle of the winter season, a time when nature calls us to hibernate. This can partly be attributed to capitalism, which has skewed our perception of time in connection to nature. Capitalism prioritizes work and production of labor by commodifying time, which is why the Gregorian Calendar contradicts the natural beginning of the new year.
