Social media is the main source many people find themselves gravitating towards. Whether it’s entertainment, news, conversations, social media is the way to go. You want to connect with old friends? You look them up on Facebook or Instagram. That’s how simple it is!
However, that simplicity applies to everyone. Anyone can find information about you with just your name. Sadly, not everyone has good intentions in mind.
Growing up, many Gen Z experienced the assemblies about the internet. These talks mostly talked about keeping your information safe. But, the rules have changed. Here is what you can do make sure your information is secure online!
@movewithjoyce noticing more and more runners being very blase about what they share online PLEASE as a bare minimum hide the start and end of your runs on strava if you’re starting your runs from your house (check privacy settings) and be mindful that when you post screenshots of your strava that people can see the entire map too #strava #internetsafety

Name
If you are mainly using social media to scroll through videos, maybe consider not having your full name visible. Having your first and last name online makes it easy for people to connect to your life. It is a gateway for scammers or stalkers to gather a profile about you.
Post Afterwards
The main thing we see on social media are people’s adventures. These little glimpse into your vacation is a great way to show people what you are up to. Wait until you are back home to post those selfies in your hotel or at the beach. This way, you are not giving a play by play of where you are to strangers who may see your post!
@girlw1thbangs Online safety is as important as real life safety!!! 🙏🫶#contentcreation #safety #content #safetyawareness #cybersecurity

Routine Checks
We’ve all had moments where we sign up for something than completely forget about it. Our information is still saved.
For social media, many scammers will target accounts with little activity. Take a quick to update any password you may have forgotten. Maybe even consider deleting that account.
This also applies to your bank account or anywhere your card information is saved. Check your subscriptions, e-mails, and apps and delete the ones you do not use.
Private Your Account
How many times have you seen a viral video and the creator did not expect it to go viral? Image that happens to you and suddenly millions of people are watching your account. Your reputation is just as important in keeping safe. If you mainly post for your friends, private your account so people can’t make assumptions about you.
Knowing When to Scroll
The internet allows people to express their opinions. However, it also opens the door for people to respond to you. A good example is danvillianumade, the woman who found the man that left a hate comment on her account. So, keep in mind that not everyone online will respond kindly to any type of hate.
