“I have naturally curly hair” said curly hair icon Frieda from Charlie Brown. For my thick, curly hair people, we have to take proper care of our hair as the cold rolls in. Our hair is already prone to breakage, but that can increase during winter. As someone who has been taking care of their natural hair for years, here is what helps me!
Leave-In Conditioner
Leave-in conditioner is going to be my biggest recommendation. They are great for fluffing out your hair and locking that moisture. Most leave-in conditioners are lightweight, so you can apply it with your hands or add it to a spray bottle.
I honestly think leave-in conditioners are an underrated product in the natural hair world. I’m currently using the one from Aunt Jackie’s. I’m in love!
Pre-Shampoo
Adding a pre-shampoo to my routine has made my life so much easier. The one from African Pride is super popular. People online, and myself, have seen that the product is worth the extra step. To use pre-shampoo, section off your hair, apply the product, and detangle your hair. You will find that your wash routine is shorter and easier! Do you need to buy a whole new product? No, of course not. If you don’t have a pre-shampoo product, you can always use conditioner, leave in conditioner, or anything that causes slippage.
Protective Styles
I’ll be the first one to preach about how girls should wear their afros out. However, sometimes we have to prioritize the hair itself rather than the style. This is a good time to wear wigs, braids, mini twists, or buns. Many people online talk about wearing a wig cap so they don’t have to undo their hair. While I have never tried this method I’ve heard good things and seen good results.
Here is the thing with wigs. You still need to take care of your hair. Rub some curl cream if you are doing cornrows or braids underneath. Wearing a wig is no reason to not take care of your hair.
Satin…Or Is It Silk?
The great things about these styles is you can wear a satin lined beanie cap with them. Satin lined beanies will be your best friend for the cold months. It helps minimize the friction of your hair rubbing against things. That will help maintain your definition. Amazon has tons for under $10! You can also find satin scarves at your local beauty supply store. You can also wrap your hair in those and put the beanie on top.
The point is that curly hair does not have to be difficult. Play around and see what works for you N Crowd!
