A sequel to 22 Jump Street has recently been announced, surprising fans after more than a decade without word on a new film. The long wait between films has caused the creators to lean into the absurdity, skipping an installment in the franchise and calling the third installment 24 Jump Street. 24 Jump Street, which has been in the works for years, will see the return of the series’ stars both on screen and behind the scenes.
Jump Street Franchise
Despite its name, 24 Jump Street will be the third film in the Jump Street franchise, which started with 21 Jump Street in 2012. 21 Jump Street starred Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as a pair of undercover cops who infiltrate a high school to expose a drug ring, on the orders of their captain, Ice Cube.
21 Jump Street was a reboot of a series which ran from 1987-1991, starring Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise. Depp supported the reboot and even made a cameo in the film, appearing as his character, Tom Hanson, before quickly dying. 21 Jump Street went on to earn favorable reviews and earned over $200 million worldwide, becoming one of the most successful comedy reboots ever.
24 Jump Street Announcement
Producer Neal H. Moritz took to Instagram to announce the film on June 10, where he posted a photo of the screenplay with the tagline “it took so long to make we had to skip one.” Fans immediately noticed the skip and began speculating about what happened to the film. 24 Jump Street will see the return of Tatum, Hill, and Ice Cube in their iconic roles. Little is known about the film’s plot, but following the ending of 22 Jump Street, which saw Tatum and Hill’s characters go undercover in medical school and even as foreign exchange students and firefighters, there will certainly be plenty of undercover hijinks in the third film.
Alongside the return of the stars on screen, many figures who contributed to the series behind the scenes will return. Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return to produce the film. However, according to Vogue, Rodney Rothman will direct the film this time. Rothman is most known for his work with the Spider-Verse series, contributing as a writer on 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
