2025: What’s In and What’s Out

Here's What's In and What's Out in 2025

Among the influx of New Year’s resolutions and predictions posted in our feeds, some people are making lists of what they want more of in 2025 and what we should leave behind in 2024. Complaining about tipping baristas? Over it. Rollerblading? Making a comeback!

Here’s our ultimate list of what’s in and what’s out in 2025.

Ins:

Starting obscure collections

Instead of wasting your money on the newest water bottle, deplete your savings on building a niche collection instead. It can be anything— old stamps, rocks shaped like US states, garden gnomes; as long as it makes you happy. There’s something campy about having to reorganize your closet to accommodate your Star Wars LEGO stockpile, and that kind of frivolous energy will set the tone for 2025.

Low stakes gossip

With the rise of cancel culture, serious allegations and internet controversies have been treated more and more like gossip instead of heavy real-world issues. This year, let’s bring back indulging in trivial gossip that hurts no one.

Decentering men

Let’s leave behind all the situationship drama in 2024. This year is all about friendship and seeking genuine connections without being trapped within the male gaze. This doesn’t mean cutting off your partner or retiring from dating; decentering men is more of an attitude shift that breaks free from social conditioning which tells women to prioritize approval from men.

Socializing for introverts

The focus on hyper-individualism has made social connections feel unattainable, especially for introverts and neurodivergent people. There’s this expectation that if you do go out, it has to be a big event or excursion with a lot of people. For people with lower social batteries, this narrative often gets in the way of socializing. We need to redefine what, “counts,” as interaction. For some people, just sitting in a coffee shop and being in the presence of others is enough. Let’s normalize casual, low-pressure interactions for those who don’t want to go to the club to catch up with friends.

The humanities

When Dr. Ally Louks posted about her PhD thesis on Twitter, which was about olfactory ethics, she was met with a good amount of ridicule from people who didn’t recognize the value in her work. This started a discussion on the platform about whether or not the humanities are important. Spoiler alert: studying humanities will give you life skills, such as critical thinking and understanding others. Instead of embracing anti-intellectualism, let’s celebrate people who are following their passions and helping society with their expertise.

Being earnest

We’re all so afraid to be serious. Whether it’s a sarcastic comment on a post or a true belief shrouded in humor, people don’t like to be sincere about their vulnerabilities. But it’s okay to wear your heart on your sleeve. Partake in that guilty pleasure, give that compliment to a stranger… It can be hard to put our defenses down, but staying detached from how we feel will only isolate us from others.

Outs:

Men with podcasts

Even though the podcasting world is super oversaturated, there’s somehow always space for another guy to buy a microphone. Hot take: we don’t need another podcast about cryptocurrency. What ever happened to a good old fashioned lunch with the bros?

Live action remakes

How much longer are movies going to rely completely on nostalgia to sell? The onslaught of live action remakes recently has been exhausting. It’s time to move past the cash-grab remakes that never live up to the original, and make space for new voices in Hollywood.

Snapchat

If you’re an adult and still have streaks on Snapchat, what are you doing? It’s time to retire from sending blurry selfies back and forth without saying anything. We promise that your snap score doesn’t matter.

Chiropractor videos

There are so many videos online of people in compromising positions being smacked and stepped on while they yell out in pain. They’re accompanied by clickbait titles, such as, “Hot Girl Gets First Chiropractic Session.” Imagine getting back from the dentist and finding a video of you online with the caption, “Bombshell Babe Gets Wisdom Teeth Removed.” Next.

Chat GBT

The Frankenstonian nature of Chat GBT is becoming clear already. Aside from its potential dangers, we are becoming reliant on this new technology. If we’re not careful, we’re entering a bleak reality of Chat GBT break up texts and asking AI to make life changing decisions.

Saying, “Psychedelics changed my life.”

Can this be true for some people? Yes. Can they ruin other people’s lives? Also yes. People are allowed to make their own decisions, but let’s stop using a newfound sense of enlightenment to look down on people who haven’t, “awakened.” Especially since psychedelics are nuanced and have major ramifications, let’s leave the psychedelic-driven intellectual superiority in 2024.
