On June 9, 2026, Prime Video released the official trailer for Elle, a Legally Blonde (2001) prequel. All eight episodes of this TV series, starring Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods, will be available to watch on Prime Video starting July 1, 2026.
What Will Elle Be About?
Elle takes place in 1995, six years before the events of the movie Legally Blonde (2001), in which Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) gets accepted into Harvard Law School and assists in a high-profile murder case.
It will be a comedy about Elle’s struggles to fit in at her new high school after her family moves unexpectedly from Los Angeles to Seattle. The trailer highlights Elle’s vivid pink aesthetic and bright personality in contrast to the grunge styles and nonchalant attitudes of her peers. It also hints that she will eventually connect with other students over helping them investigate a school scandal involving the principal “fudg[ing] facts on official paperwork.”
Why Is Amazon Making A Legally Blonde Prequel?
Originally, MGM had announced in 2018 that they were planning to make a third Legally Blonde movie following the commercial success of Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde (2003). This sequel was a commercial success despite having lower average ratings than the original.
However, Amazon purchased MGM in 2021 and decided to move in a different direction, influenced by Witherspoon herself. Witherspoon, who is also a producer on Elle, explained on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” that she got the idea to make a Legally Blonde prequel after watching the TV series Wednesday (2022-2025), which follows Wednesday from the Addams Family through high school. She told Jimmy Fallon, “I wanted to see who [Elle] was before college, before law school…and now Amazon is making the show.”
How Is the Elle Trailer Being Received?
Viewers are expressing dissatisfaction over the premise of the series and the existence of a prequel as opposed to another sequel. One of the top comments on the YouTube trailer reads, “There was absolutely no need for this. I was happy rewatching Legally Blonde for the 101th time” (@eeshagupta7986). Other comments point out plot holes: “Oh, this is about the same lesson she learn[ed] in the first movie? So how did she get back to being that person at the beginning of the movie?” (@nancySIX), suggesting that it “would’ve made more sense if she was Elle’s daughter” (@JustaTiredEngineer) instead.
Although the audience reception to Elle is already not off to a great start, perhaps viewers will change their minds once they see Amazon and Witherspoon’s vision for what Elle Woods was like before she joined a sorority and started dating Warner.
