The official One of Them Days movie trailer just dropped and everyone is talking about it. Even though the sneak peek and list of cast and crew members speaks for itself, we don’t mind explaining why the comedy is seemingly just that good.
The film, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, is led through Dreux’s (Palmer) and Alyssa’s (SZA) wild attempts at securing $1,500 for rent by 6 p.m. that day to rectify Alyssa’s boyfriend’s foolishness. He takes their rent money without saying anything to invest in their, “future,” otherwise known as his ripoff t-shirt business. The two broke roommates seek alternative ventures to get the money in time, including looking into a loan with a laughable credit score, climbing a telephone pole to grab and sell a pair of Jordan’s hanging off a line, and donating blood. The film is layered with the caveat of Dreux having a corporate job interview just two hours before the money is due. Dreux is set on taking this job, convinced that it will ease the tensions of the two roommates who currently live paycheck to paycheck. The comedy features themes of deeply rooted friendship, the supportive nature behind it, and the struggles of barely holding it together as an adult.
This production is a huge win for the community, with the two lead roles being played by Black women. It’s great to see a more lightweight reel, as oftentimes Black women are unfamiliar faces in the world of comedy. Palmer, a naturally funny and talented actress, adds One Of Them Days to a lineup of successful movie and television credits. There is a high level of anticipation to see singer and songwriter SZA on screen, with the Sony Pictures project being her feature film debut. And that’s not to mention the notable supporting actors increasing the movie’s buzz, including Katt Williams (any movie with Katt Williams screams hilarious), Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow, and Janelle James.
The crew of the film adds to the ‘must-watch’ value, with Syreeta Singleton as the screenwriter, Lawrence Lamont as the director, and Issa Rae as lead producer with her production company, HOORAE. Rae is notorious for producing content that is hilarious, relatable and fresh. Her hit TV shows, HBO Max’s, “Insecure,” and HBO original, “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” and Max originals, “Sweet Life: Los Angeles,” and, “Rap Sh!t,” left fans asking for more. Rae’s keen sense of understanding of what her audience wants to see sets the project up for high ticket sales on the film’s debut. She offer an authentic closeup on her characters’ lives by producing a narration of Black joy, upset, growth, unsureness, love and resilience.
Refinery29: Unbothered breaks down her filmography and her process on developing the refreshing display in their announcement of the One Of Them Days movie by explaining, “Hoorae bridges the gap for Black creatives by providing them opportunities, access, and, most importantly, funding to ensure their projects reach a global audience. One Of Them Days is a prime example, as she collaborated with diverse and emerging screenwriters to develop the buddy comedy.”
Working beside her to produce the picture is Keke Palmer herself, Sharon Palmer (Keke Palmer’s mother), Deniese Davis of ColorCreative, Poppy Hanks from Macro Film Studies, Charles D. King, and James Lopez.
One Of Them Days hits theaters on Jan. 24, 2025, and we will be the first in line for tickets.
