The Oscars Make History

There were many firsts in this year’s Oscar nominations. For starters, Sinners costume designer Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman in Oscar history to hold the record for most nominations in any category — how inspiring! Speaking of Sinners, the film broke the all-time nominations record with 16 nods, as it should. And the DP for Sinners, Arkapaw, became the first woman of color ever nominated for Best Cinematography.

It doesn’t stop there. Moura is the first Brazilian actor nominated for Best Actor, and Chalamet is now the youngest man to earn three acting nominations.

Who Got Snubbed?

With nominations always come debates and controversy, and this year was no different. The most talked-about snub was Wicked: For Good. Viewers are split on whether it truly got robbed, but the film received zero nominations. Neither Ariana Grande nor Cynthia Erivo earned mentions, which isn’t shocking, considering Grande didn’t win a Golden Globe Award for Glinda, and Erivo didn’t win for Elphaba. The film also received mixed reviews, so many saw this coming.

Another actress people feel was overlooked is Chase Infiniti for her role as Willa in One Battle After Another. And another project watchers believe deserved recognition is Sorry, Baby, written and directed by Eva Victor, which follows a young woman navigating life after being assaulted. It almost feels like women-led films and stories centered on complex female characters were pushed to the back burner this awards season.

Love them or hate them, this year’s nominations prove the Academy is evolving, albeit slowly, messily, and with plenty of side-eye from the rest of us. Awards night might crown the winners, but the real story is the conversation we’re all having right now.
