The 2025 Oscar Nominations Are Here: ‘Emilia Pérez’, ‘The Brutalist’ and ‘Wicked’ Lead

The highly anticipated 2025 Oscar nominations are finally here after several delays due to the ongoing devastation from the Los Angeles wildfires. Originally slated for January 17 then moved to January 19, the nominations were officially announced Thursday, January 23 via a livestream hosted by Wicked and Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and Saturday Night star Rachel Sennott.

Dominating after winning big at the Golden Globes is the Spanish-language musical about a drug lord seeking gender reassignment surgery Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations. Following are the historical epic, The Brutalist which follows an architect who flees post-war Europe to rebuild his life in America, and Wicked, the screen adaptation of the iconic long-running Broadway musical with 10 nominations each. Additionally, Conclave, a political thriller about the election of a new pope, and A Complete Unknown, which tells the story of Bob Dylan’s early career, join the front runners with eight nominations each.

There were 13 first-time acting nominees announced, including a historic nomination for Emilia Pérez star, Karla Sofía Gascón in the Best Actress category making her the first openly transgender person nominated for an acting Oscar. “What an illusion, what an honor, what love. I feel fulfilled, it is the culmination of nine months of promotion and two years of work.” Gascón told The Hollywood Reporter.
