For centuries, paranormal sightings have been reported all across the world. They have been shared around the bonfire or passed down through generations, but they’re now being shared across a popular social media platform: TikTok. It all started with TikTok creator Danielle (@audacitti), who shared her personal ghost story and asked for viewers to share some of their own. Since then, hundreds of thousands of other TikTok creators have shared their paranormal experiences.
Danielle first uploaded her ghost story to TikTok in April of 2024, and began the video by asking viewers to “tell me a ghost story that sounds completely unbelievable but is entirely true…” Since then, audiences all across the globe have shared their own paranormal stories, ranging from Indigenous folklore, poltergeist activity, and alleged cursed objects. But what is it that is causing this trend to garner millions of views?
Aside from people sharing their own experiences of the paranormal, the trend has become a safe space for individuals to explore into the unknown and allow others to spectate their alleged testimonies. It’s also become a hub of investigation and exploration of the supernatural. The TikTok community offers both validation and skepticism within the comments. But why is this trend intriguing millions of viewers to listen to random strangers’ other worldly encounters?
At their core, ghost stories capitalize on human fear of the unknown and beyond. It begs the question that’s been asked for centuries… “Is there life after death?” Individuals sharing their testimonies of their paranormal encounters opens a sanctuary, fostering a bigger and unprejudiced community. This safe space allows people to revisit and retell their most vulnerable and fearful moments in the hopes of finding an explanation to their unanswered questions.
