ChatGPT as a Virtual Therapist: Benefits, Risks, and What We Know

People use AI to write emails, make grocery lists, and now even for therapy. Given all the uncertainties surrounding AI, it’s not surprising that using it for emotional support might raise some eyebrows. Still, emerging evidence suggests that an unfeeling AI may be a more competent source of support than it initially appears.

What Do We Know So Far?

Many studies emphasize that the issue is not yet fully understood due to limited research on this new and rapidly evolving technology. AI is a new frontier in a lot of ways, so there is really no current consensus on the effectiveness of AI chatbots like ChatGPT as virtual therapists. Still, it can be useful to see what the experts are saying.

A 2024 study titled Assessing the effectiveness of ChatGPT in delivering mental health support, found that ChatGPT can be an effective tool for supporting mental health, but it has important limitations.

According to the study, ChatGPT has several strengths. It can provide emotional support, help people recognize problems, assist with decision-making, and even offer crisis intervention, if needed.

However, the study does not recommend ChatGPT as a replacement for traditional therapy. Instead, it suggests that ChatGPT could be a useful tool within a standard therapy process. Since many people will use it regardless, it’s important to discuss the study’s findings about ChatGPT’s limitations.

ChatGPT often lacks nuance when addressing mental health conditions and can miss important details. Communication can also be a problem because it may be misunderstood in certain cultures or dialects, leading to frustration for users. It’s also known to sometimes provide inaccurate information.

Why Are People Turning to Chatbots for Support?

Many people hesitate to seek therapy out of fear of being judged. This makes anonymity a key reason why some turn to chatbots as digital therapists; talking to a faceless program can give users a sense of privacy.

Another reason people might rely on AI for emotional guidance is the shortage of mental health professionals in the United States. According to the 2024 State of Mental Health in America report, there is only one mental health provider per every 340 Americans.

It’s also no secret that therapy can be expensive, especially for those without insurance. The high cost of sessions often deters people who need help. AI chatbots, on the other hand, can often be used for free.

Should I Talk To AI About My Problems?

Right now, the answer is: we don’t know. Current evidence on the topic implies that it can be useful with surface-level problems, but may not be as effective as traditional therapy. Still, if you’re curious to try it, be aware of the chatbot’s limitations.
