Winter has been marketed to the masses as “relationship season,” a time to snuggle with your partner under a cozy fireplace, while spring/summer is marketed as the season for friends. However, there is no universal recognition of a season for alone time. Alone time is essential to maintain peace and solo dating is great for self-discovery. Solo dating challenges you to get out of your comfort zone, and what better way to do that than going out alone?

None of these activities are exclusive to a season, but after a long summer of heat waves and group outings, we can challenge ourselves to make Autumn the season of self-discovery. Fall is the best time to gaze at the ever-changing leaves, try autumn-themed drinks, or go to fall festivals. To welcome the new season with self-exploration, here is a guide on where to start when dating yourself!

Movie Theatres

Seeing a movie is one of the more safe and reliable choices when solo dating, as there is always space to see a film. After a long day at work or even after an outing with friends, you could pop into a theatre for a showing. Or you could plan in advance and make a day out of it. Either way, seeing a movie by yourself is as fun as it is with a partner.

And the best part of going to a movie alone is you don’t have to share your popcorn!

Apple Orchard

Who says apple orchards can only be good for a family outing? It is a fun activity for anyone who wants to gaze at the changing leaves and pick fruit while sipping apple cider.

Apple orchards are some of the best events happening during fall, and Illinois is full of them for anyone in Northwest Indiana. County Line Orchard in Hobart, Indiana offers live music to enjoy while indulging in apple-flavored desserts, including apple pie, apple donuts, and slushies.

Book-ish Events

If you’re a fellow book lover, the only feeling better than finishing a five-star book is shopping around bookstores. This is a calming activity to do alone, allowing you to take your time looking around the store and sign up for book events. If you belong to the Chicago area, there is always a time to do so.

Call and Response is an independent-owned bookstore located in Hyde Park that celebrates authors of color. You can find many book events like book signings, book clubs, and trivia night through the store’s official social media account, where they upload regularly.

Museums are great when dating, but specifically new artists’ exhibits. What screams peace more than being surrounded by beautiful pieces? Not only does this benefit you, but also the new artists in gaining exposure and connecting with the public.

You can find new shows in Chicago at the Hyde Park Art Center, where they push for recognition of new artists looking to break into the art scene. They also offer studio classes for any age.

These dates can be tried at any time but if you are new to spending your free time by yourself, fall is the perfect time to try it. After all, when the fall leaves change, it marks a change in life, adventures, and self-fulfillment.
