Sinners Cast Stun in New Photos Amidst Award Season Sweep

Cast of “Sinners” posing together in a group photo.

While Sinners has been sweeping awards season, breaking records for Oscar nominations and dominating nearly every category, the cast has recently appeared in a series of never-before-seen photos for TheWrap Magazine. Shot by Yudo Kurita, the stars of Sinners stun with curated high fashion looks displayed in captivating portraits.

Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan

Sinners director Ryan Coogler appeared alongside his star-studded cast in this shoot, dressed in a suit by Thom Browne. Coogler was captured with Sinners star Michael B. Jordan, who sported a shirt by Bottega Veneta. Jordan’s performance as the Smoke and Stack twins has received numerous awards and nominations. Kurita captured both Coogler and Jordan in separate black and white portraits, and together in a shadowed portrait against a white background.

Coogler has received numerous accolades as a director since his debut Fruitvale Station in 2013, which also starred Jordan. For his work on Sinners, Coogler has received awards for best director and best original screenplay, and has received Oscar nominations for both as well. Jordan has also received his first Oscar nomination in the best actor category, competing against Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet

Delroy Lindo

In stark contrast to the dark suits and muted tones of Coogler and Jordan’s portraits, Delroy Lindo was captured in a sleek white coat by Veneta against a blue background. Lindo’s photos have a grainier look, and even depict him in a blurred image which obscure his features, leaving only his bold white coat to be readable.

Lindo portrayed Delta Slim in the film, a blues musician who plays at the Smoke and Stack twins’ juke joint. Lindo’s performance has earned him multiple nominations for best supporting actor, including his first Oscar nomination. Lindo recently made headlines alongside co-star Jordan for being the victim of controversial remarks at the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA), which sparked conversations online regarding disabilities and racism.

Wunmi Mosaku

Wunmi Mosaku sported a black dress by MSO Lagos. She appears as if she is on her way to a funeral, with the outfit being reminiscent of mourning attire. This decision may be a to reference her character in the film and the darkness which surrounds the main cast. Mosaku posed in a series of in-motion shots, which look as if they are stills from old film reel, possibly a nod to the early twentieth century setting of Sinners.

Mosaku’s character Annie was lauded as the “soulful core” of the film by The New York Times. Indeed, critics felt this, as Mosaku has won for both best supporting actress and best screen couple along with Jordan. Mosaku recently appeared in a profile piece by The New Yorker, however the story faced backlash as the cover illustration did not resemble Mosaku, and was called careless and anti-black.

Miles Caton and Jayme Lawson

Miles Caton and Jayme Lawson appeared in close-up portraits. Caton dressed in a sweater and jacket combo by Versace, and Lawson in a turtleneck and jacket by Loewe. These portraits incorporate the blurred effects of Lindo’s portraits, but not to the extent where the details of their outfits and features are unrecognizable.

Caton made his film debut for his role as Sammie, a performance which shot him to notoriety, winning awards for both best supporting actor and best breakout. Caton’s musical talents played an important role in setting the mood of the film, and recently he was able to display those talents alongside blues legend Buddy Guy, performing the film’s original song “I Lied To You” with Guy during his performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk. Lawson also received her first award and nomination, as the cast of Sinners took home the Actor award for best performance by a cast.

With the Oscars just around the corner fans cannot wait to see what awards Sinners will take home. The cast of Sinners have been making headlines for months, and this photoshoot has solidified the presence and star-power that they have both on-screen and in the media.
