Since her breakout single “Pound Town” went viral in 2023, Sexyy Red has established herself as a sex-positive force in the rap industry. With her graphic, frank lyrics, Sexyy has become known for anthems that center female sexuality and pleasure. But when the self-described “X-Rated” rapper announced the launch of her new beauty line, Northside Princess, on Monday morning, it seemed like her penchant for the promiscuous had gone just a bit too far.
Within an hour of the announcement, “Yellow Discharge” was trending on Twitter – and not because of a sudden interest in women’s sexual health. “Yellow Discharge” is just one of the controversial Northside Princess lip gloss shade names that were visible in a photo Sexyy uploaded to her social media pages. Other names that caught the Internet’s attention included “Gonorrhea” and “Pussyhole Pink.”

The Internet’s response to the product launch was a mix of disgust, shock and disappointment. Even loyal Sexyy fans wondered why the St. Louis native couldn’t have opted for tamer homages to her songs as names for the beauty line.
would it have been too hard to just do “rich baby daddy red” or “skeeyeeyellow” why not put your brand to work, i can’t understand this https://t.co/ehgQpxWE4C

While Monday’s announcement came as a surprise to most of the web, Northside Princess is actually a rebrand of the rapper’s original makeup line, Sexyy Red Products. The original line’s products even had many of the same names that Northside Princess products do now. In a 2023 interview with Complex, Sexyy shared that, despite her detractors, the unusual product names didn’t hinder her business’ success.

“I got a lip gloss brand and the names for my lip gloss is something that nobody would’ve ever thought of,” she said. “They was clowning me for these names, but when I was selling it, it sold out and it went crazy. I got one called Nut and it’s the color of some nut. I got one called Gonorrhea. It’s green like gonorrhea. I got one called Yellow Discharge, like how girls be having yellow discharge…The shit cute, and it smells good and it sold. But people was going to talk shit. But other people was like, ‘You is a marketing genius.’ Because the shit sold so fast.”
Whether that genius will translate to Northside Princess’ success remains to be seen. But as the Internet continues to admonish Sexyy for the new line, it’s clear that the rapper’s main concern is staying true to her brand – no matter what others might say.
